A489 to Caersws, then A470 to Builth Wells, A483 to Llandovery, A40 to Llandeilo, A483 to Pont Abraham, one junction up M4, you’re there!
Don’t try the A483 from Newtown; you can get round the bridge there all right but you still have to go back up the A44 to Rhayader to avoid the 13’9" bridge at Crossgates, just past the A44/A483 island.
Or head to rhyader from crossgates and turn left signed weighbridge. Will take you into llandridod industrial estate.
Is it Rhyader were the monument is in the middle of the road so you have to go the wrong side around it if heading a certain way and you miss the turn off near the cattle market to avoid it?

It is Rhayader where the town clock is in the middle of the road. Some vehicles travelling east on the A44 go around it, on the wrong side of the road, others turn left by the Leisure Centre opposite the Livestock Market, and come across Dark Lane and rejoin the A44 on the outskirts of town.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking of mate. First time I went that way I nearly took the corner shops roof off as I stayed on my side of the road to turn right. Could fit a ■■■ paper between my trailer and the roof and of course everybody in town stood and watched

Its local to me,but not so good for drivers not knowing the place.
Thanks for the info…sidevalve and truckerbob.
I don’t know the routes but if you are looking to avoid that low bridge in Newtown then you can… It’s a one mile diversion but it is not well signed. It is a while since I’ve been down that way but I remember they warn you of that low bridge for miles and miles but don’t mention the fact that if you get near it you can divert around the railway line and over it and return back to the main road. Will check it out as this is just from memory.
The route for trucks over 13ft 3ins is almost kept a secret but you can use it as there is a sign saying 7.5t Except for vehicles over 13ft 3ins… Well there are 2 signs and one of them is hidden by trees !!!
If you are coming south on the A483 either into or are in Newtown, then search maps for a street called ‘Lon Gerylli’ which comes off the A489 Llanidloes Road and follow that road back to Plantation lane (its a bit twisty but like I said, it’s ok for trucks and it’s wide) . Turn left onto Plantation Road and that brings you back onto the A483 to continue south… bridge avoided. Like I say, it’s like they want to keep it a secret, but if you go onto google earth maps to Lon Gerylli/Llanidloes Road you will see the signage. Obviously do it in reverse by turning into Plantation Road from the northbound a483 if coming north… If I remember right, it saves a seriously long diversion for trucks.
looks like a483 most of the way after dodging the bridge
I think the diversion takes you through an housing estate to avoid that low bridge in Newtown. I agree it’s not well sign posted only a sign saying a weight limit except for vehicles over said height or somthing along those lines
This one ! It does go.through a bit of a housing estate yes but the roads are adequate for trucks. The diversion is ridiculous if you do not know about this little route around the bridge !

I don’t think the diversion adds a lot as far as time is concerned; it looks a long way round but it’s actually only seven miles further. Don’t forget that the A470 between Builth and Newbridge has been improved recently, nice bit of road now though it’s a pity they didn’t make it dual carriageway or 3-lane to allow cars and vans to get moving. The A483 is crap anyway from Newtown to Llandrindod Wells, A470 is a much better road in an artic even allowing for the nadgery bit in Rhayader.
Watch out for the tipper lads and them on logs around these parts. They don’t half put a shift on around the tight sections where you have about a ■■■ papers width between trucks and most of them have the metal mirror protectors fitted, probably because they know there’s a good chance of them clipping someone else’s mirrors.
I’ll be in and around south wales probably twice a week, from now until the end of summer.
It really is a fantastic place to ply your trade, once you get to know your way around.
One thing is for sure…a little bit of local advice makes all the difference.
