We’ve recently been given ‘drop and drive’ at all Morrisons depots, where we now don’t have to break down pallets to get it. We’ve always had it if we ‘help break down’ or do their job for them as we call it.
So today I get my 10 mixed pallets of produce tipped go in to get keys and was told to “pull off and park on the other side”
So I said, “I’m sure we’ve got drop and drive now love”
So she goes to get me the gate pass and then some Hitler says “you’ve got to break all those pallets down first!”
Me “nah your alright, I’ve loads of time and my TV and beds set up, I’ll just park over there”
30 mins later gets a knock on the door “you can go drive, here is your paperwork”
Ha ha, I’ve done my bit and brought it here what is it with these companies, they get it delivered for peanuts and then expect you to help break it down when you could be getting a break in.
When Morrisons had their place at Droitwich, I had the same scenario one day. The girl behind the glass said “All the other ■■■ drivers help to split it down.” To which I replied, “I don’t work for them love, I’m an agency driver, take as long as you like as I’m paid by the hour, ■■■ drivers are on job and knock.”
Ken.
I was asked to do that as well and proceeded to give them my bank account details… Why said the lady clerk… So you can pay me for doing your job oh and can I see the insurance docs of the company that has my name on it in case I get injured in the warehouse… Foreman was called I repeated the above and was given keys and gate pass and told I wasn’t to appear at this depot again THANKYOU for that I said don’t want to come back. And never have, our company don’t do rdc very often as we 99% of the time cart fish around
Fair play to you Newlad. I never ever help to break down pallets at any of their sites, when I’ve been asked to I’ve always replied that I’m happy to on the condition that they send one of their guys with me to my next drop to assist me there!
I also got into a discussion about this at Burton Latimer with one of their union bods where I told him he was doing himself out of a job by expecting drivers to break pallets down. When he asked how so I told him I used to load methanol at ICI Billingham and once the loaders got to know you they asked you to load yourself (to save them leaving their nice warm cabin) sure enough some suit spotted this and figured that if all drivers self loaded they’d save 10 wages. Bingo, they’re redundant all of a sudden it’s the fault of the lorry drivers.
I used to work in a warehouse, on a couple of quid an hour more than I’m on now too, if I wanted to be a warehouse operative I could quite easily go back to it. I don’t want to as it’s boring as sin, you have to work weekends it’s bloody freezing in winter and sweltering in summer, I’m quite happy doing what I’m doing.
■■■■ them! I’m not doing their job and subsidising their cost, the worst thing is they all ■■■■ off for a cig or a coffee when people go and help, sod that, just means I can’t do the collection inbound had lined up ha ha
Good on you New Lad, last time I dropped at a Morrisons Chilled (for Culina) I was asked to D & D, no problem, just every pack of yogurt under the top layer had a Great Big Thumb through one of the yogurts !
A bit Childish but I had a little Chuckle to my self as I drove out of the gate with my notes all signed & stamped. Lol.

like lidl and ALDI!
We wouldn’t get away with it there! I’ve seen them reject loads there when people have refused to unload it. I’m sure that would go down well with the boss.
That’s the thing though, if it’s agreed with your firm, your doing it which is fair enough. If it’s not, you’re not. Simples.
I never understood the mentality of indoor folk that says "Let a driver do our job for uz, and we’ll skive away here, and get job and knock to boot".
No you won’t. Not in today’s economy. If your indoor job is to load and unload trucks, then you’d better make sure you do some of that each and every day, or the next round of job cuts will include yours!
Skiving doesn’t make the hands of the clock go around any quicker. I’d rather be busy and continuously employed than drinking tea, and laid off after a few months.

If you were drop n drive you wouldn’t have had your notes back.

Correct, it was drop n help break it down, then they checked it off quicker. Still doing their work for 'em.
Been there many a time and i’ll only spend 10 minutes breaking down normally the easiest pallets but it gets me in and out quicker so I’m happy.
They did that at Waitrose when we started to do their work, most loads were ok, but they wanted a hand with flowers, so once i had cleared the top layer of each pallet, and re stacked them all mixed up on other pallets, they didnt like it, so when they asked me to re-stack them again, thats when i told them i only stack once.
Its amazing how many companies today expect drivers to help in the warehouse, perhaps we should ask when collecting paperwork Is it ok for johnny to come with me to my next drop
see what they say ! its been expected of drivers to unload completely at LIDL or ALDI, but thats the germans getting back at us for winning the war but we are professional drivers, and the last word is paramount Drivers
and we shouldnt be expected to do other peoples work in order for companies to employ less staff, in order to make more profit, no wonder Sainsburys and Morrisons and Tescos are losing out to the german firms, their outlay is a lot less than the big boys, but making more profit.
Awesome
It does not happens every time that we get all the things with our own ease, any ways nice approach!
Never experienced this, but would happily give it a go if requested. Although my random terrets make me not very approachable on my best days, ■■■■■ bollox boobies etc…
Out of interest, what does this ‘breaking down pallets’ consist of? Never done it.

It’s not easy to explain, best if you have practical experience.
Next time your delivering pallets ask the lads “Show me how to break down the pallets for you”.
