Newest MAN artics - is it just me?

My 56-plate FH has gone :frowning: and I’ve now got a 65-plate MAN TGX 440 which I’ve been piloting for a few weeks now. Is it just me or does anyone else find them hard to get comfy in on long distance work? The seat initially feels super soft and comfy when you get in it but after an hour or so I get really bad pain in my knees. I’ve tried adjusting the seat height and angle and also pulling the squab out more but nothing improves it. Never had issues as bad as this before, even with the most hated truck for comfort - the Axor - I can get always manage to get comfy in that but this MAN is crippling me and I’m having to stop a lot just to get out to have a walk around.

I know you said that you have adjusted the height and angle of the seat, but IMO it can only be that, you’re either putting too much or too little pressure through your feet which in turn is making your legs ache. No quick fix I’m afraid, you’re just going to have to experiment until you get it just right.

Of course when you do get it just right another driver who’s obviously shaped like a bent wire coat hanger will then drive it, and so the process repeats!

I’m not kidding, I’ve tried every ■■■■■■■ angle !! I tried it with the seat base tilted down slightly and that doesn’t work for me either. The seat feels like it doesn’t go back far enough on its runners (nothing jammed behind it, it’s physically against the stoppers on the runners) and so there’s not enough space to stretch my long legs. Yet the Axor is known for poor leg room due to the engine hump but I don’t suffer any issues in those. It just feels like there’s no symmetry going on with the steering wheel, dash shape and seat position. You can get the steering wheel rake just right so it’s comfy to rest your left elbow on he left armrest and your right on the soft door window ledge whilst holding the wheel, but then your lower body feels too close to the dash even though the seat is all the way back and your legs/knees get pain/cramp.

Box of matches anyone :grimacing:

To me they are the worst trucks out there.
I had a man before the tga version came out and it was a fantastic truck comfy and really well built…now they just seem like cheaply put together rubbish…
Must be hard to get used to when you had an fh

I have no such problems in my XF106 Super Space Cab .

:grimacing:

We run them and I agree they are rubbish. The seat isn’t directly behind the ship’s wheel, it’s very slightly to the left. The trucks themselves are reasonable but I also cannot get comfy and suffer from acute back problems since they came. I had no such issues in XF105’s or Volvo FM’s, or even the old wendy house FL10’s. Look at the floor and you’ll see how much more room the lhd trucks have by comparison. I have driven 62, 14 (from new) and 65 plate (from new), and all are equally horrible. My latest one has not got cab air suspension and do find it ever so slightly a better ride.

I drive MAN and I love it! Spend 5 minutes setting things up before you go and it’s an excellent drive.

Carl usher :unamused: only happy when whinging or complaining about something

Just get on with the the job and do what you are paid for! Those that can do! Those that can’t whinge :imp:

I am 6’ 4" and now and again get aching knees on a long run.

Did Middleton-Falkirk-Middleton yesterday in a Scania G cab, and it was torture. Scania’s are bad news if you are tall.

Done a few long runs in TGX’s though (newish ones), and don’t seem to have a problem.

I’ve had one for the past 3 years, and the seats are one of the best things about it, far better than the Swedish offerings IMO, but we all have different shaped arses so whats comfy for me may not suit someone else.

If i have any criticisms (with seating, don’t get me started on the bloody gearbox from hell) its that the armrests are cheap hard plastic, though our fleet parcel spec (on dead max weight  ) fodder might be far different from an all singing version, so hard are they that i never use them, would help if it went an inch or two higher too.
The vehicle would be more driveable leading to better comfort if the steering wheel was reduced from ships wheel dimensions down to something thinner and a bit more useable so you don’t need the arms of a Orangutan just to navigate it, raising the steering gearing would help too, might make the thing a bit more direct on the road.

Scanias are bad news full stop!

Regarding the TGX, give me a TGA any day but only if it has a gearstick

Another night of knee torture  . Only did Northampton Wakefield and back too, so a short night as I’ve been having Stoke on too recently. I spent hours ■■■■■■■ about with the seat again, tried every possible angle and combination but there just isn’t anywhere to give your legs a stretch once on CC. Left side not too bad as I can stretch my left leg into the footwell but there’s no space at all on the right side and the furthest I can get my foot is jammed in between and underneath the brake and accelerator pedal  . I want to be able to push the seat further back but it’s already on the stoppers. I just don’t understand it all because the mk2 FH 2006 I was driving before is of course the classic cab that is known for the seat being on top of the steering wheel and hardly going back very much yet no issues in that. It’s got to be something to do with the driving position in the MANs. No issues in any other make and I’ve driving them all over the past few years.

I’m actually on the verge of packing this job up because the pain gets that bad. :frowning:

Just a thought Carl; have you tried folding the bed up? Not 100% sure but I seem to remember that with the bed folded away the seat goes back a little further.

Yeah that was the first thing I tried but the seat is as far back on the runners as it will go. :frowning:

Well that’s me out of ideas. Looks like you’re bolloxed dude!

I have had one all week and i have enjoyed the comfort not like the bloody horrible hateful Stralis which is my regular steed and not looking forward to getting it back next week !

Always found MAN’S to be one of the most comfortable trucks I’ve driven.
I can never get comfortable in DAFs though. Always end up with the lower part of my back sore after doing a shift in one of our CFs. Yet most other drivers don’t have any problems in them. What’s comfortable for you might not be comfortable for someone else.
I remember reading something years ago that the designers of vehicles design things round 95 percentile man. So it can explain why.women and the other 5% of men may struggle to get comfortable in a vehicle.

Carl Usher:

You get an armrest? All I get is the gearstick. Crack on drive.
