Newbie tachograph question

I’ve done both agency and full time and both have asked for the same. Manual entries on the tacho are your friend.

Ithought you had card though ? how do you enter manually it if its a digicard ?

Just been reading some of the tacho posts in the time dir section, seems overly complicated, even on one set of rules but when going outside domestic its nuts

Most drivers are on on EU regulations, you only go onto UK domestic regulations if the job or vehicle is exempt from EU regulations.

If you’re learning the regulations learn the EU regulations first as that’s what you’re most likely to be working to, UK domestic regulations are very simple for goods vehicle drivers so you can learn them when/if you need them :wink:

one question i would have is are vosa concerned with the WTD rules as they are with drivers hours. Part of me asking this question is just to get a bit of understanding about them, ie if i know the limits i know how not to break those rules or cause unnecessary hassle for myself.
from what i understand its a maximum of 15 hours working, i take it thats driving time + other work, are there other things to be aware of with WTD rules.
the scenario i was thinking about lets say this example

would this be legal
Drive 4hrs 30min
break 45mins
other work 4 hours
drive 4hrs 30min

can you do other work 4 hours or a is there any limit right before doing another 4hrs 30mins driving?

yes as far as tacho rules no for wtd as you need 30 mins end of 6 hours so you’ll have to stop for break 2hours in to driving

No it’s not legal under WTD regs, as you cannot do work (i.e “other work” or “drive”) for longer than 6 consecutive hours!

No but your employer may be.

This has nothing to do with the WTD, the maximum shift length is governed by the daily rest that’s required and that’s in the drivers hours regulations not the WTD.
The maximum shift length is 13 hours which can be extended to 15 hours 3 times between weekly rest periods.
(This is because you are required to have a daily rest perod of 11 hours which can be reduced to 9 hours 3 times between weekly rest periods)

This would not be legal because the working time regulations require you to work no more than 6 hours without a break of at-least 15 minutes, 4 hours other work and 4.5 hours driving exceeds the 6 hour rule by 2.5 hours.

You can work for 4 hours then start driving but legally you are required to have a break before exceeding 6 hours working time so could not legally drive more than 2 hours before having a break of at-least 15 minutes, this 15 minute break would also count as the first part of a split driving break.

The way I do it is thus.

Note what time I start then count on 6 hours so if I started at 6am then by 12pm I need to of taken at least a 15 minute break. My job allows this because I do more driving than other work so I always time my first break of 15 minutes just after I’ve done my first drop so I know I’ll have to take a 30 minute soon after so that covers both my WTD and my driving hours.

it does get easier. You’ll get into a system that makes sense to you.

All WTD breaks can be taken in separate parts of at-least 15 minutes each.

Looking just at driving time and breaks that’s fine, when you’ve done 4.5 hours driving you don’t need the break if you’re going straight onto daily rest.

As Radar19 said it gets easier to understand after you’ve been doing it a while.

Depending on the type of work you do, you’ll definitely set up a routine. In my case it was sometimes same layby, about same time each shift…

Once, you’ve established a pattern, you’ll not have to think about it. Just don’t stop and forget to switch to break…

Regarding the walk round checks. There is a requirement to check the vehicle is legal/roadworthy etc. It’s also a sensible thing to do. But, unless the company insists (some do), there is no requirement (unless something’s altered in the last few months), to fill in a check list. . A lot of pointless ticks on a sheet of paper that you could’ve done whilst sat in your car before you started is pointless. I just make a mental note of the date the MOT runs out/ approx how much tread left on the tyres and another detail or two that proves I’ve had a good look - eg a scrape on the n/s rear wheel arch. That was, you can convince Mr. Inspector that you’ve actually looked, rather than just filled in a pointless form, whilst guzzling a bacon butty in the drivers’ room… :laughing: :laughing: .
