Newbie Seeking Advice

Hello Everyone

Been collecting LGV models (WSI models) for a while now focusing on hiabs including low loaders/semi loaders (mainly ones that have hiabs) and heavy haulage and have decided to have a go at the real thing.

Got my provisional. Nearly finished working my way through an online theory database of questions. Almost read the DVSA Guide Driving Goods Vehicles. Hopefully i’ll get the theory tests done and dusted shortly.

My problem is though (i suppose because of my interest in specific models of trucks, especially hiabs  ) i don’t really fancy doing any other type of driving work. Don’t really know where the fascination came from but I suppose people collect all sorts of things. Mines hiabs.

I wondering if i have too high expectations that i’ll be able to get a class 2, maybe a class 1 as well, and walk into a job driving those types of vehicles. I know i could just bite my lip and do other types of work but i’ve got a suspicion that i probably won’t want to do that.

I suppose if i had been collecting box body rigids, drawbars and artics i might have been more inclined to do that type of work. But have never really been interested. Have i developed an interest in certain types of trucks that a newbie would have little chance of breaking into?

At the end of the day collecting those trucks has been a hobby and i suppose i’m looking at working as a driver in the same way. I just don’t think my heart would be in doing anything else, even just for a while. Am i being a bit too picky or is it important in this line of work to enjoy what you are doing?

I am also just starting to realise the amount of rules/regulations involved in this job. It’s one thing collecting them but something altogether making a living out of it. Hope i’m not making a mistake in going down this road.

Cheers.

Mark

Hi Mark.
Firstly before you decide what you want to drive you have to decide if its worthwhile money wise, look at what agencies are by you and what companies there are.
Where abouts are you someone on here will help with what works about, everyone knows not to jack a permanent job for agency work (I did and landed a perm job but was a risk).
As for wanting hiab work look what builders merchants are near you as they might be the best bet for a newbie or see what agencies have to offer.

When you get qualified keep your options open, only applying to hiab work ain’t going to get you anywhere.

Have a think carefully before you part with thousands of pound in training

Think long and hard before parting with your hard earned pal. As a new pass you’d ideally be taking almost anything that comes your way to get that all important experience under your belt. Once you’ve got enough of that and gotten yourself a good name you can then start to be more picky [emoji846]

I’ve always been interested in trucks (most males in my family are truckers and there’s a lot of them) I also had a large scale collection of 1:50 trucks from tekno, wsi and corgi but done a massive down scale once I started the job I only have a few now… figured I no longer need the collection seeing as I now drive the real things but I didn’t enter Transport to make lots of money I entered it cause it’s in the blood [emoji1303] lol good luck with whatever you decide pal [emoji846]

Cheers guys.

I’m in the greater London area so probably quite a lot about. I thought maybe builders merchants would be the way to gain some experience which I don’t mind but obviously would rather move onto other types of hiab work if the opportunity arose. Don’t mind muck grabbers but not sure if those guys are expected to do other types of building/road works/excavating etc…or whether agencies handle that type of work.

I think the real buzz would come from low loaders and semi trailers not necessarily construction plant but even containers or such like. Ideally those with a hiab.

Not working at the moment. I know it’s costly but I’m happy to do it even if its just for the satisfaction. I don’t want to ■■■■ off any agencies by saying no to other types of work maybe I could be upfront with them and say this is the type of work I would like to do and if you need someone at short notice i’ll be interested.

Hope you got back what you paid for them. Bloody expensive. Got my eye on a 350 euro one.

Yeah i ran in to profit with most, a lot of the tekno and wsi models I had are hard to get hold of now so offers were quite impressive but know what you mean, some go for mega money! [emoji846]
