i’m a newbie on here so please excuse any dumb questions!
i’m not a newbie to driving, i started doing 7.5t in 1991 and passed class 2 in 2000, after that i did 4 years class 2 work but had to stop in 2004 because of ill health. anyway, i had to surrender my licence to the dvla because of a medication i was on at that time. time marched on and now i feel the time is right for me to return to work.
i have sent for the forms from the dvla to have my licence reinstated, but there seems to have been some changes since i was last behind the wheel. the CPC is a new thing that wasn’t needed before and i have been trying to find information about it online, it is confusing to say the least!
it’s module 3 that i am most worried about. from what i have read, module 3 costs around £1000 and seems to involve re-taking the LGV C test, is that correct? or have i misunderstood?
my question is: assuming all goes well with the dvla and i get my licence back, what do i need to do to be legal to drive? i have already decided that i need to do a day’s refresher training before i go back to commercial driving, but if i have to basically “re-do” my driving test for module 3 then i won’t bother and just might as well do a course to get me back up to test standard.
i am also thinking of upgrading to class 1. if i do that, does it mean that i have to re-sit the driving test every 5 years? if that is the case, i am going to have to seriously think about it because driving artics could work out very expensive!
as i mentioned, the information on the net about the CPC has me really confused, it’s all new to me.
also, have there been any changes to the tacho hours rules since 2004?
I’m not sure of the rules with regard to medication but if you’ve passed a cat C test I can’t see why you’d need to re-take if you satisfy the medical requirements now. You will have acquired rights on the dcpc.
Module 3 is the original driving test and you would not need to retake this to gain your CPC.
As you had 7.5t on your licence pre 1997 you have acquired rights to CPC and you will only require 35 hours of classroom tuition before September 2014 to keep your CPC status active.
Look online for providers of Periodic (not Initial) Drivers CPC as prices vary.
They must be done in blocks of 7 hours
Make sure your hours are uploaded to your CPC record (A fee is charged).
I will put my tin hat on here and say that. Lot of the content you will be ‘taught’ will be worthless but so long as you attend you will get he credits towards your 35 hours.
NO TEST either.
With regards your CE category, once you pass your test you only need to attend the 35 hours every 5 years to keep it active. You do not need to retake the driving test (unless it is revoked)
If you are a undertaking your class 2 from the beginning you need to take 4 modular tests.
Mod 1= multiple choice theory test.
Mod 2= CPC multiple choice theory test.
Mod 3= Practical driving test.
Mod 4= Practical CPC test (show me tell me.)
As you already hold your class 2 you just need to complete 35 (5x7) hours modular training sessions before September 2014. The cpc modules are not allowed to test you, they are just an attendance course.

many thanks guys i felt like a bit of a dope having to ask, but the new rules were unheard of when i left work (even the digi tacho was only a rumor) so thanks so much for clearing that up.

hi rog I see your near to me, I’m just down the road from you in sunny coalville the job situation around our area doesn’t look too bad at the mo.
you mentioned that there have been some changes in the working hours in 2007, that’s something I wasn’t aware of. could you fill me in?
hello m8, I drove for upton too! from the end of 02 to spring 03, small world ain’t it? I was working through protemp at the time so the money was pretty good too mucky job tho! I enjoyed it. in fact I heard they are taking on at the mo and I’m thinking of giving them a bell when I get my ticket back, gaffer told me he was happy to have me back when the agency moved me on, so I’m optimistic. Leicester heavy haulage are looking for drivers too and I got a good rep with them. they pay for CE upgrades if you sign a 2 year contract (I’ve been on benefits long term so the jobcentre will pay for training just to get rid of me).
sorry to waffle on nice to meet you and thanks for the links
