New Year New you

Anyone got plans to move jobs/careers in the new year? Think everyone contemplates at this time of year. My plans are to move back to nightshift, dayshift is doing my nut in with too much traffic & managers who think you’re driving a time machine. A nice steady night trunk will do for me in the new year.

I’m leaving the crappy double manned job I’m in now, going back tramping.

Nightshift driving is the best thing you can do, but don’t tell too many people or they’ll all want in.

The worst part is if you come back after 6am then you hit the morning nutters who are the worst, but its pretty good I can’t deal with daytime traffic anymore. Just watch out for Tuffnels as they are generally total nutters.

Only move I’d like is either a better paying night job or a nice 9-5 IT job.

I suppose it’s not new as such but over tine through chopping and changing etc I’ve found a job I like, that pays well and, most importantly, I’ve conditioned them over time to work around me - for example they now know on a Tuesday I struggle to get my lad picked up from after school care so they give me a run that will allow me to do this.

I guess my plan is to stick at it because this is the first full calendar year where I’ve been in this decent situation so it’s a matter of plugging away I guess.

No, I think I’m pretty much sorted so I’m expecting this year to follow the format of last year, will carry on working through the agency in my current job, an 0600 start with a finish time normally between 1400 and 1800 and no nights out until March, then away on the narrowboat until September. First trip will be to the end of the Lancaster Canal, almost to the Lake District, with a stop off at Liverpool to see the U boat U534.

Considering taking a break from driving, can walk into a well paid factory job but know I would be bored within hours.

Maybe go work legal, but that will also bore me after a few weeks.

Sad state of affairs when you need to explain it because you know some halfwit won’t click

With the ending of the flour contract prior to Xmas, and a new driving license, full dcpc under my belt my option are open. But like Harry the agency lifestyle suits my leasure lifestyle and will be a hard habit to break

Harry, U534 had 9 cylinder MAN diesels , you cannot have one for you nb , it won’t fit and as it was underwater for nigh on 50 years it must be knackered. Stick to your Lister 2 pot or similar. But it is worth a look mind !

Double post

I’ve just moved onto trunking gas tanks on the nightshift with my current employer.
Well happy with it (and the pay rise). I’ll be staying put for some time I think

I’m toying with getting a transport manager’s cpc just to see what it’s like on the other side, get out of the cab for a while, and to see if it could lead to better things 10 years from now. I’m starting to lose my soul driving lorries, and my big four oh is just weeks away.

Well I’ve been Driving LGV’S now for just over 20 years, I have been in my currant job for 3 years and in my opinion I have got as far as I can in terms of pay and conditions start times etc and any other driving job would be a step backwards, I don’t enjoy driving like I used to due to all what’s been said on this forum and what scares me is I am in my early 40s and the thought of doing my currant job for 20 plus years isn’t something I want to do. I am looking at getting out of driving altogether and doing something that I can learn new skills from and hopefully give me some enthusiasm for the next 20 years

Thinking of moving into forklift delivery and collections - big change for me - will find out tomorrow after I’ve had a try out.
