New Tramper

Hi everyone I have been driving for over 20 years and due to having family young have being doing mostly local work with steel, fridge work etc. However I have finally accepted a new job where I will be tramping to Liverpool Nottingham and back to Scotland.
Has anyone got any good advice or tips and are there any apps for truck stops etc .

After 20 years you would think this would be known, Snap has an app that I used so if your firm is on snap you can plan and pre book, likewise Shell, key fuels etc all have apps that give you fuel stops. Cooking yourself is a big one for me, always did my own food. Kettle is a good one and the obvious such as microwave and fridge should be supplied as standard by your outfit.

Seriously 20 years in the job and your asking that question WTF Get yourself on the newbies forum

Fuel mate app is ok let’s you choose which fuel company you use where stations are etc.

Shellapp does same.but only for shell stations if you have a shell fuel card. Settings on shell app need to change settings to truck sites…or will send you to a local shell garage with out hgv pumps.

As for parking just go on Google maps move it to an area and type in truck stops. And most will come.up.
Or next time at a truck stop look out for the free truckers news paper.
The middle pages have a truckstops guide which will give you an idea altough they don’t list all the ones around either.

Truckstops are a bit thin on the ground, but try and avoid lay bys and MSA s if poss., one is unsafe the other is equally unsafe, but they financially ā– ā– ā– ā–  you for the privilege :bulb:
.
2 extremes truckstops .either all together in a certain area, or very few in the area you are in…SW springs to mind for one,.and the worst area SE.

So you’ll need to find your own quiet (and safe) little corners on well lit ind ests near to town facilities etc,.and/or retail parks without restrictions, preferably near a Maccy Ds for bog and a coffee in the morning…but only if a non valuable load, or empty…leave back doors open

Ask other drivers who you know, for places… but be selective who you pass the info on to, if anybody.
Becausec some uncivilized absolute ā– ā– ā– ā–  will sure as hell ā– ā– ā– ā–  up the parking situation by leaving his crap behind in the morning. :imp:
And spoil it for the rest of us.

I see there’s a few new truck stops , one at Newark just off a1 , one between Bingham & Leicester ( don’t think it’s open yet ) just off a 46 , sign on m1 saying one at crick ( assume it not one on jct 1 m6 .
Did laugh when some clown from new mob said I’d like you to carry night out gear at all times , didn’t seem to appreciate the reply

Around crick someware there’s a truck stop at what used be a stobbarts place if it’s still there haven’t been for a long time

Also end off M6 Carlisle there’s another stobbarts truck stop night owl that’s not a bad place to stop at

Three years after he’s either driving around very tired or he’s sussed some parking spots. You’re welcome :+1:

Well I’m here now so I’ll offer some advice.
Don’t bother cooking your own food. Most snap truck stops give food vouchers so get in the cafe and get a nice meal and enjoy it. If you stop at motorway services. Your get a 10 voucher for 3 quid. You can buy good healthy reduced food from M&S or for a sort of treat a burger on that. I prefer staying away at night. Much easier and good for reducing stress. Just enjoy it for what it is.
Some great places to stay. Stockyard. Colsterworth and route 74 for a start.

Welcome to the forum, what snacks or meals would you take just in case you can’t get to a decent truck stop for a hand made meal or if could not get to a motorway service area or MSA?

Some drivers like the small camping gas stoves to knock up a meal from cans of potatoes, soup or meat, I used to love noodles then add a tin of sardines or pilchards to it.

Some places on the road charge a minimal fee to top up the flask with hot water.

My tip is you can use the microwaves at the MSA restaurant that they install so parents can heat up baby milk, they are tucked out of sight as probably don’t want people cooking meals and want customers to pay extortionate prices for their food and snacks.

Does the Stockyard still have those two randy ladies who sit by the front entrance and offer to wash the back in the shower?

Have you tried Lincoln Farm Cafe, for years I heard drivers banging on about it and assumed it was near Lincoln, it’s not, it’s near Birmingham, exit the M42 on junction 6 to take the A45 then the A452 then look out for the sign, it’s tucked away and very quiet at night, no road noise?

They take SNAP.

This was one of my favourite truck stops plus there is or was two pubs right next to it if you don’t want a meal at the truck stop and have a pub meal instead.

Multi award winning truck stop, in a quiet location, nominated and won best one of the year in the free Truckstop
News paper a couple of times.

I though that was the legendary grab-a-granny night aka the karaoke night

That’s the one, the grab a Granny night.

Those aging Cougars are legendary

Remember stopping at route 74 once got a cheese sandwich woman asked want some salad with it said yes.
It came out with a little paper pot full of coleslaw not what I’d call a salad though

Who’s the local lunatic who looks like Jimmy Saville who hangs out in the bar there?

We once had words and he muttered the immortal ā€œdo you know who I am?ā€ My answer from really close to his nose was ā€œis the dementia really that bad pops?ā€
