New tolls in Portugal

I am driving by car to Castelo Branco in Portugal on December 8th and I have been told by the tourist office there that the often postponed
tolls from the Spanish border on the A25 A24 A23 are effective from that day.Vehicles with a portugeese registration can use the toll roads
and call into a pay shop after two days and settle up or buy a pre paid gizmo. Non portugeese vehicles have to buy a Temporay Device gizmo at the border ( imagine the chaos ). These cost about 27 euros plus whatever credit you put on. The 27 euros is refunded when you leave and hand the gizmo back in but any remaining credit is lost.
The cost from the border west to Aveiro on the coast for a four axle or over vehicle is 44.40 euros. From the border south as far as Castelo Branco, about 100 miles,it is 29.80 euros. In my car I can turn off south before the border and get to Castelo Branco on the minor roads for free.
People I know in Portugal do not know what is going on so please do your own research if this affects you.
Cheers Phil.

So much for freedom of movement as promised all the time by HM gov. We have been screwed again

why would any body go to castelo branco stayed a week there in 2007 not my most favorite place…

I was over there about a month ago…Exactly which part of the border are we supposed to use? The tolls on the boards were blank, so no price was displayed either. :open_mouth:

I live in spain ,and was going to portugal for 5 days over xmas, takes me 3 half hours from were i live to the algarve, then i read that as from the 1st of December they start charging tolls, crazy , so I cancelled the hotel I think a lot of people will be doing the same thing, I looked for another way round but it will take nearly 8 hrs to get to the algave ,thats a lot more fuel , so i booked a hotel in spain happy xmas to all the lads out there

Why cancel? The tolls cost pennies in Portugal for a car.
