New to this board and want to spread my joy

Hi all, I have been reading this site for a few months and have to say that your help to new drivers is second to none.

As i was currently unemployed and going through a seperation i decided to use what was left of savings and take my Class II. I passed my medical in december and once the january skintness was past i went for my hazard and theory tests passing both very well. I then went to Red Rose training in Stoneclough for a driver assessment where i was told i would need 12 hours. Not bad i thought at first. So 2 weeks ago i got hold of the money and phoned RR up and booked in for this week, 4 hours training mon, tues and wednesday with test on thursday.

My trainer Frank was a great teacher. Seemed to have lots of experience, was very friendly and was a good teacher.

Monday went well, apart from footache similar to when i weas learning to drive cars years ago.

Tuesday was a good day as well, Mastered reversing exercise and Frank told me i was almost at test standard so was very happy.

Wednesday was going well until some idiot decided to undertake me on a roundabout and come within 3-4 inches of touching front bumper. This kind of unsettled me and 10 minutes later mis clicked the shifter and ended up in 8th not 4th gear at a junction and stalled in the middle. Frank said not to worry, although that would have been a fail on test day better to have that mistake on a lesson,

Test Day, I turned up at RR at 7.30am with an 8.30 test start. Did 1 reverse to get me going then a nice drive on to the test centre in Atherton. Frank gave me some encouraging words then we went into the office and i waited nervously. Then the examiner came in and first impressions seemed friendly enough so i took a huge breath and out we went. 2 mins of vehicle questions and a quick reverse and then out onto the open road. Well i have to say that luck was on my side. Even in busy school times everything went my way. Pedestrians didnt step out, traffic lights didnt change last minute etc etc. Test seemed to fly by and when we pulled up i was confident i had done ok. Then “I’m pleased to tell you that you have passed” i was overjoyed and i had only 4 minor errors.

I owe all this to Frank and RedRose who were very professional the whole way through and i can’t recommend them highly enough. Maybe a tad more expensive than others in the area but you get what you pay for. Lovely clean lorries, excellant customer care and a good coffee machine

Anyway waiting for license to come back and have phoned a few agencies and found joy with 1 who has told me for now he could guarantee me 3-4 days a week which is a start.

So 1 question for you guys. I have sat nav, safety boots etc. But what other things should i have in my possesion for taking out on the roads. Any help you can give a newbie would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks all for reading

and a good coffee machine

Congratulations, just been looking at Red Roses website as its quite local for me. The coffee machine helps too

They are a great outfit and recommend them highly. Gonna get a few months experience then im going back to RR for my ADR with 21 hours cpc built in. Goodluck with whoever you choose.

Hello! Welcome to Trucknet and congratulations on your pass! :sunglasses:

As well as your Satnav, I would recommend you invest in a truckers’ atlas and if you’re working in a town, a detailed map of that area.

Then just the obvious:

Work gloves
Diesel gloves
Disposable gloves
Baby wipes
Blue roll, or kitchen towel
A disposable camera, if you don’t have a camera on your phone
Phone charger
Water
Flask for hot drink
Spare carrier bags (for rubbish, etc.)
Nibbles in case you forget your lunch (nuts, biscuits)
Spare straps
Duct tape
Spare analogue tachos, or at least 2 printer rolls, if digital

Then daily: lunch/dinner, fruit, drinks, something to read on your real, change of clothes if the job is likely to be dirty that day

Well, that will do for starters!

Hope you enjoy your driving.

Welcome and good luck with the new job

just an add on dont forget a credit card or money i made that mistake once and ran out of fuel  was a right palaver to sort out !!

Many thanks for the replies, the list of things needed will come in handy thanks. Have managed to find an agency that will take new drivers and he says he can get me 3-4 days a week which is a start,. Just waiting for my license to come back, I passed last thursday and the examiner said he would send my license off for me. Any idea when i should get it back?
Also just got off the phone from a company 20 mins drive away ( not saying names just yet) who says being a new driver is not a problem and is paying over £9 a hour 45-50 hours a week so im praying that i get it.
Just gone through a seperation and need to find work fast as i have a 3 bedroom house to pay for by myself so im hoping the gods are with me lol.
Once again thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated.

You can phone DVLA mate and ask then if your license has been processed and sent back out to you yet, that’s what I did.

Well done and Good luck.

just make sure you have your pass certificate did you do a copy of your old licence before it went off then your sorted should be able to drive with that till your new licence comes then they can copy that and bobs your uncle as they say

Just actually parked up at red rose, they seem like a great bunch who offer the whole package. Think I will be going with them.

They said they have contacts with some local agencies too so hopefully I could get sorted.

Just spoke with RR, DVLA told me they still haven’t received my license even though it was done electronically. But DVLA told me as long as i have my test pass certificate with me i could drive so not all bad.

Tell them i (Adam drake) recommended you  Mandy is the lady who i have dealt with all the way through and she is lovely so your in good hands.

Will do. The lady I was dealing with was Tammy. Seemed a very professional setup there.
