New Tacho Head

Me old Scanny had a new head fitted y’day (old one had a 10min difference between time shown and what was on chart) and after finishing and removal of chart, I noticed the trace continued well past my finish time…any idea as to why? Left a copy for the boss to enquire with the fitter, it’s a brand I’ve not heard off before but can’t now remember it!

You ain’t making much sense there chap. If it’s on the old one don’t worry as that’s why the boss has had it changed.

Could you not put a digi unit in. All our analogues are fitted with digis when the analogues fail.

Depends on the year. I believe the older style don’t have the compatible wiring

The only way the trace can continue beyond your finish time is if the clock is wrong and it had gone beyond before you removed teh chart. Once the chart is out there is obviously no more trace being made.

That’s the new one, old one never showed any extra trace as such, just the time didn’t match and the day driver was a bit over picky! The ‘extra bit’ starts at 23:00ish through till 04:00ish, but as you can see, chart was pulled at 00:30ish. And, upon calibration, they seem to have replaced 2-3km with 2-3km that I can’t seem to find anymore…gps shows 52-53 now (was 55-56) speedo showing bang on 56…that’s extra time on my night now!

To add, it’s a 54 plate.

Coffeeholic…does an old style have an internal clock as such that would allow for the extra bit of trace if incorrect?

For those that can’t see it, it’s right at the top of the chart, running along the bottom of the numbers

You sure that trace wasn’t already on there before you used the chart?

Inclined to agree with you Niel, think it might be a second hand chart after blowing it up, you can see the gap.

That chart has got four traces on it. I’ve never seem a trace around the outer rim of the chart before, but that may be because I can’t recall using any analogue tacho other than Lucas Keinzle.

Anologue tacho’s, Whooooooo

It shouldn’t be 2nd hand, gaffer takes them out the box and straight into our envelopes for the week. Didn’t notice anything else on it y’day but I’ll have a look at the one I’ll be using later a bit closer!

Is there something catching the chart and causing the trace?

Mucker85…no visible signs of anything catching but last nights chart reveals exactly the same marks and I checked it was ‘clean’ before filling it out. There are some other markings I’ve not noticed before on the older head (maybe they were there and I just didn’t see them!) a bit further round…I’ll take a picture later as there in my car atm!

Certainly isn’t a legal trace, so nothing to worry about, probably caused by a foreign object stuck somewhere in the head.
Technicly, it is a defaced record sheet, which can attract a penalty.

im going down for this, I can see it coming!! Wonder if the 2nd chart that was in had anything to do with it? That got slung last night so for the last time, I’ll see what happens with tonight’s with a clean chart and an empty head. We’re supposed to be getting some new Actros on long term lease ‘soon’ so won’t have to worry about the old styley charts…or the draft/howling of the wind from the bent door or a crappy heater/air-con etc etc etc!!

I think you need to start defecting the vehicle for ‘spurious trace being recorded on tacho chart’ to clear yourself and to make it clear that you are not interfering with the chart yourself. Is this a new tacho head or just another one? If it is a good secondhand one you may possibly be using the wrong type of chart. Veeder Root and Smiths tachographs used a chart with a different centre location. One of them did not have the lozenge but a circle and two smaller holes of different sizes. However I would have thought that you would have noticed the difficulty of putting the chart in the head, and the trace and time would not marry up.

Pretty sure it’s a new one cav551 but with our lot, you never know! Using VR tachos with the ‘Pear’…I’ll have a look at the ‘E’ numbers later to check for compatibility…hope the ones we got are a match, he’s just got another 50 boxes of 'em!

PS…I like that ‘spurious trace’ line…I’ll use that…it’ll blow his mind!
