New Starter

I am now in my 11th year of driving class 1, having gained much experience in nearly all fields of trucking, ranging from curtains, tankers, STGO, bulk tippers to flats with the exception of Fridges.
I have just started a new job 20hrs less £100 more per week than my previous one! But my question is this…Why is it when you start a new job everyone thinks you know sweet FA and you’ve never driven a truck before?

Because some fellow truckers tell their bosses the world and what they’ve done so far…but can’t sort the easiest things.

Otherwise just to cover their backs for all their H&S etc.

Does it matter? Play the dumb card, they will just expect less of you. Its not like you can progress up the career ladder as a truck driver. It’s the guys that try to impress when they first start out that get upset because their TMs know what they are capable of doing. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m personally a class A dribbler that needs help changing a light bulb and topping up his washer bottle. I might ask the TM if he can help me adjust my seat and steering wheel as I’m not a mechanic.

This is a serious point btw. I have seen this and it does work. Know a guy who gets out of deliveries because he is purposefully crap at them. Screws over the other guys who have to pick up his slack but that’s life.

Playing dumb has been my approach and I smile each day listening to the BS. Still it could be worse…

And people moan when they just get a set of keys thrown at them and told to get on with it

That’ll be the 67-year old who’s not long retired from our place!

I’ve been doing European about 13 years, and I must meet at least one who has been doing the job since year dot, having been to the moon and back and can’t help themselves from explaining what a top driver they are, I find it easiest to sit back nod, smile and look interested while thinking how much of a ■■■■ they sound, but it’s not just their driving skills they need to brag about.
At my current place there’s a little clique that have blagged their way into a senior team position, they have bloated that much they believe themselves, there’s two that upon finding out I was ex military decided to explain their military careers from single handedly taking out an Argentinian sf post on the falklands to being the stand by team at the Iranian embassy.
Sad sacks

Always Gona be like that mate , the “new” guy always rubbish [emoji23][emoji23] I currently do agency work and jump thru few company’s , I’m happy to play the dumb card and let the home boys crack on in their BS , that means I get the easy routes and a nice day after another nice day [emoji23]. Saying this sometimes I smash a 12h route into 9h just to see the faces of some veteran drivers “allegedly” and when I get debriefed on transport office I tell them I “got very lucky today with traffic “ roads were clear I was amazed !!! Not everyone wants to do a 12 hour day just for the money. Crazy thought but he may have a life outside of work. :grimacing:

No need to screw it up for those that rely on the hours or enjoy the extra money they bring is there. May be a good for those in that job … I’m alright Jack springs to mind .
Do people not research the industry they pay the money to take the test to get into . Any search will tell them long hours for average pay but a good wage can be made if you put the hours in . What is really screwing this industry up is the second career guys coming in because there first choice career has gone to pot or they have screwed it up then want to change this industry to suit them . I hear flipping burgers has good hours and a similar pay rate … rant over

so it’s smarter to grind long hours every day for a decent pay ■■? Decent pay should come from a basic salary in first place !! I have a life and family that I love outside work , so yes I vote shorter days with decent pay all day long !!! And I will say more to any of drivers that like to cream the job for long hours ,One of the reasons HGV driving jobs aren’t well rewarded as they used to be its because , creaming jobs means we get more expensive as a bill to the company’s , their response its to drop hourly rates or basic salaries!
I’m amazed how some how some think they are smarter … every company’s know well who or when drivers cream a route ! They ain’t dumb , but due to many aspects of health and safety, laws and so on , they don’t won’t to tell drivers in the face … but they know it all …

Having been both sides of the desk I can feel you is because there are so many idiots on this industry. Treat them all like new starters is simply the safest option

precisely mate , I have a life and family outside work that I love , always happy to skip a long day ! Good pay rates should come from basic salary’s /hours and not having to grind 15h to bring the bacon home …

it’s alright to rant mate , we all entitled to our views! But we should fight for the decent salary starting from the basic hours , and not fighting to see who does the longest shift to bring more bacon … that tactic it’s well known in transport offices , hence now a days big company’s recruit thru agencies , coz we are cheaper in many ways , some more than others lol , basically it’s a polite way to put two fingers up to drivers that cream routes …
