Hi Toby,

May I ask where you got your info please?

Cheers for the PM Toby.

I’ve no idea why that info needed to be private, but maybe you have your reasons.

Anyway, to answer your question…
There’s already a requirement (since 2005 in the UK) for a driver to carry “a form of identification which includes a photograph,” so just for the time being, a driving licence, a passport or a digi-card will do nicely.

It is correct to say that there’s a new requirement for a photo needing to be on an ADR card, but I just wondered where and how you found out, because the requirement for a photo being actually on the ADR card is not widely known in the UK at present.

Dave, your reply makes the new requirement sound very cloak and dagger!

Hi GBPub,

It wasn’t my intention, so I’m sorry if I gave that impression.

It’s a new requirement, but it’s not widely known because not all DGSAs or trainers read everything that they’re supposed to.

Toby and I have had a couple of PMs on the subject, and without breaking forum rules I can say that his OP isn’t a rumour. I simply wondered where he’d got his info.

Here is the requirement from ADR 8.2.2.8.3:

The certificate shall have the layout of the model shown in 8.2.2.8.5. [ = the picture below] Its dimensions shall be in accordance with ISO 7810:2003 ID-1 and it shall be made of plastic. The colour shall be white with black lettering. It shall include an additional security feature such as a hologram, UV printing or guilloche patterns.

The new ADR “card” will look something like this:

As you can see, there is a space for a photo on the front of the card, but it remains to be seen what the DfT and DVLA will make of it in terms of how and when it will be introduced in the UK etc etc, so Toby’s source was correct in what he said.

I’ve known about this since last November, but AFAIK there’s nothing concrete from DVLA on the subject just yet.
