New Job advice needed

Well I had my class C training booked with Paul at Elmete Driver Training, unfortunately I have had to put it on hold for a while due to personell reasons. In the meantime I have just been offerd a job driving a 7.5, it’s doing distance work with a Cple of nights out, the pay is not too bad £8.00 ph + nights out, it’s delivering Decking Timber and garden fencing etc. Now the advice I need is ! I have never used my digi card as when I was on coaches they were all analogue ( many moons ago ), if I am on a night out can I leave my card in all night or do I remove it, also should I do a print out every week or every day, also some of the vehicles are analogue tacho so I suppose I would keep any printouts and keep them with any analogue tachos for 28 days, also as I have not been driving for the last 28 days would I be better off to make a manual log of other work I have done over the last 28 days, many thanks in advance.

Right. Hope your personal problems work out. Never good fun.

Tacho on nights out - This is a bit of a mixed bag I think. If it was me I’d take it out (never done a night out though), some recommend leaving it in to prove you’ve been sat still all night. Print outs aren’t necessary (unless you need to write down your hours for timesheets (agency drivers likely to do this)), all the information is held on the card for the period of time the data needs to be kept for.

As for time you’ve worked over the last 28 days, you can write it down and keep it with you if you want, but you’d need to do one for every single day (name, hours worked, and signature, on tacho paper, I think). Don’t tell anyone I said this, but I wouldn’t worry too much.

Anything else don’t hesitate to ask, sure a more experienced driver will be on here soon, or has posted while I’ve been typing this :L

Hi Steve,
1)overnight leave your card in but make sure it’s on break ,you can take it out if you wanted to though.
2)you don’t need to do any printouts as the tacho card stores the last 28 days on the card, but always carry a couple of spare tacho rolls should Mr DVSA request a printout from you or if you need to do a printout to explain why you have gone over drive time ect due to hold ups ect.
3)yes any analogue tacho need to be kept for 28 days
4)if you haven’t driven in your last job in a vehicle that required a tacho there is no need or reason to make a record of what you did for the previous 28 days before you started driving.

Just make sure that your tacho does’nt change modes.ie.You put it on break and if you turn the ignition on for some reason.Might want to put the window down or something. Some tachos are set up to change to other work.So obviousley if your card is left in.This will mess your rest period up.Of course not a problem if you have the card removed.By the way.I’m one of those who leaves mine in all night.

Thank you so much for your help, it’s all a learning curve, I will probally just leave my card in overnight then I won’t forget to put it in the next day,I have also found a digi card simulater I will look at that should help me.
