New Iveco Tractor unit for ST£46K

Now I know another major factor our Eastern counterparts can be so competitive in International transport…Their capital costs seem a lot lower than ours

Not sure thats really all that cheap to be honest.

I’m pretty sure you could find a base-spec 4x2 Stralis with the smallest engine in this country for not much (if any) more! Also, let’s not forget that the capital cost of running a truck is a ridiculously small part of the overall operating cost, and that even if trucks were half the price they are now it would barely make a dent in the operating cost.

However let’s not let the basic financial facts get in the way of finding another limp-wristed way of explaining why some British hauliers have failed to adapt to the changes in the market, especially if it doubles as an opportunity to stick the boot into a foreigner eh? :unamused:

in late 2005, i was given a quote of £46,000 for a brand new Stralis 430 6x2 from a main dealer, it was the active space cab, the one with the baby seat for the passenger

at the same time, i had quotes for a Merc megaspace and a DAF CF Skycab, both came in at between £57,000 and £58,000

We got a pair of brand-new Euro 5 2546’s with Megaspace cabs 2 years ago for 57750 each, so not much shift in price by the looks of it.

Could it be that these units are a cancelled order, so are priced so the dealer can shift them?

the one i specced was brand new unregistered not a cancelled order

I meant the one’s on the op, even the advert is in the secondhand trucks section.
The company I worked for a few years back got a couple of FH’s that were destined for a German company, but were then surplus to requirements. So we bought them instead even though they weren’t quite specced to what we wanted, but we couldn’t wait for a new truck to come off the production line.

Frm what I gather other than v8 scanias there are deals to be had on most trucks.

Don’t quote me on this but having had a conversation with a polish haulier who works for me they where ordered by the company Link and cancelled. so that’s prob why so cheap.

It looks like the Scania V8 is also keenly priced in the East…

Again, not really at £75k. A poverty-spec 4x2 R500 which is sitting in dealer stock isn’t realistically going to be fetching much more in the UK.

A 6x2 with leather, retarder and the 2-pedal setup might well fetch stronger money - but apart from having the lowest powered V8 engine in the range (and not even the EEV one at that!) that Scanny is as billy-basic as they come, not really representative of the typical factory order for a UK dealer from which I suspect you are drawing comparisons.
