Why are some new irish lorries on a 131 plate? Superstition over the number 13?
Hi, the newest registrations are actually now on 132- (132-D-12345) for example, dont know about superstition though!
cheers Grant
I saw a 132 the other day either superstition or are they having twice yearly reg changes like the uk
131 is for Jan-June registrations & 132 is July- December registrations.
Yes it’s superstition as they didn’t want the number 13 on a number plate
I asked my old man about this when I was over in Leitrim to see him last month.
According to him it’s nothing to do with superstition, it’s that Ireland is going to be having two number plates a year (131 &132 this year, 141 &142 next year), the same as we have here with 13 & 63 plates for example.
The 141 and 142 plates would have looked handy on the ol Scanias!

This is the right answer, they didn’t want the number 13 on a plate as they (the motor industry and the government) felt it would put people off buying new vehicles and the reason they change it in the middle of the year (to 132) is to try and boost sales as most people wouldn’t buy a new car much after June/July as it would only be ‘new’ according to the number plate for 6 months.
So yes it’s mostly due to superstition and also to try and boost new vehicle sales.
It was over superstition alright, although more people got married this year ! It’s supposed to change back to the old way next year, ie 14 MH 123 etc.
Cheers
