New German Traffic Penalties

The German authorities have tightened the sanctions against road users infringing traffic rules. The new rules took effect on 1st April 2004 A few examples of the new penalties are as follows:
Driving through a red light without a traffic accident: 3 points €50
Driving through a red light with a traffic accident: 4 points = up to €200 & 1 month driving ban
Exceeding the speed limit by more that 20 km/h: 1 point
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h: 3 points & 1 month driving ban
Use of hand held mobile phone whilst driving: 1 point = €40
Driving on a Sunday or public holiday without a permit: 1 point = €40
Drink driving: from 4-7 points - fine up to €1,500 - driving ban up to 5 years (or permanently if
serious case)
