I wonder if anyone is able to help me with this?
After some years away from the industry, I have re-trained and recently obtained my Cat C license. I had read there was a shortage of hgv drivers and really fancy getting back into the industry. I am 56 years old, have no points on my license and passed my cat c test at the first attempt after only 2 full days training. I am on all the job sites, have registered with several agencies and have contacted all the haulage companies I can find within a 20/25 mile radius. I have had two interviews but no job offers as yet. I keep coming up against my lack of experience as a possible issue, but without a job how are you expected to get that experience? If anyone out there is able to give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Tim
It’s not the best time of year to be looking to be honest.
Thanks Harry,
I suppose March onwaqrds it might start getting busier?
Tim
It normally picks up around Easter although it’s still worth looking in the meantime, you just need one lucky break, right place at the right time sort of thing.

this will probably bring howls of derision, but, have you tried Stobarts?they take new passes etc
I live in Bognor Regis West Sussex and can travel up to around 20-25 mile radius.

It is often said here that it is better to contact companies in person, rather than e-mailing them. Even people that I have first e-mailed, their replies sometimes end up in my junk box, so I wonder how many of your unsolicited e-mails have ended up in company’s junk boxes?
Thanks Supatramp,
That makes sense, I’ll be visiting companies tomorrow.
Many thanks.
Try bid-food (3663) Worthing
It is a bit of a chicken and egg problem. To get the job you need experience, but you need the job to get the experience.
There will be chances because absolutely everyone did a first shift (which nobody can deny).
I would err on the side of saying to try phoning round instead of turning up out of the blue, considering the current situation.
Many thanks biggriffin I will contact them.
Also, thank you noremac, yes phoning might be the best thing to do in the current situation.

Have you tried Bleach of Lavant? I know they’re down your way and are a fair sized outfit.
Another tip for new drivers is to sign onto an agency, tell them you’re willing to try anything and that you’re willing to travel a fair distance for work. This will make you stand out from the crowd against the “I’m not doing that” types. Once you get a couple of bites, take whatever they throw at you and hey presto you’re gaining experience. Once you’ve done this for a few months you can start telling prospective employers about your experience You’ll start finding work comes your way more easily.
Truck driving is a small world really, put in the hard miles to start with. Build your reputation as a hard working and reliable driver and it will afford you the ability to be more picky in the future.

Thank you.
Yes I’ve tried Bleach of Lavant, the last time I contacted them they said they’d furloughed all their drivers for the time being! I’m on several agencies books but nothing yet, will keep pushing.
Hi Tim. Have you tried Grundon, Viridor or a few other waste companies at Ford. It could be skips or or-or but hours and pay usually good and will get that needed experience. Most large waste companies have good r’s and c’s
