New Class 1 driver in North East!

Just passed class 1 this morning and am looking for advice on how to make the transfer between class 2 and class 1 in the employment stakes.

Currently driving locally within the construction industry but with the slowdown in the housing market, the job is dying big style.

Our employer has reduced our fleet by 50% over the last 5 months and I can’t see it stopping there. They also seem to be intent on peein people off until they leave at the moment which apparently is a well know ‘trait’ of our employer durin hard times.

Also there is a massive gap between what I have earned annually for the past 4 or so years and what basic pay is now, it looks certain as if all overtime will be stopped shortly, so am looking to jump ship before I go bankrupt lol!

Live in County Durham so if anyone can give me any advice on where to look for decent paid class 1 work, please let me know.

I am quite fancying night trunking/possibly working for one of the numerous locally based Supermarkets eg ASDA or Morrisons but don’t know how they recruit or what the money is like?

Cheers…

Thanks mate

Think its the likes of Salveson and Norbert Dennsitrangle or however its spelled  for direct employment.

When I first started I phoned an agency who advertised for Sommerfield and they took anyone at the time then after 6 months other options became available and so on till after 2 years I was sorted.

Plenty work then though and these assessments were not required but I have did five of these in the last four months TDG this morning.

Found the first 8 or 9 months difficult to be honest and took anything for experience.

With your boss struggling maybe he would allow you to do agency work a couple of days then you still have a wage.

I’ve seen the Salveson wagons - they must be somewhere around Aycliffe or Darlo are they?

A colleague of mine who passed his test about a year ago tried one of the agencies but they told him that they were reluctatnt to sign him up as he was currently in Full time employment, even though if they could have given him something that could lead to a perm position he would have happily left and took the chance?

At the moment I am caught in a catch 22 situation with current employer. Was told that my wagon is still quite profitable, however others in the fleet are making bot all and our gaffer tends to look at profitability as a fleet rather than on an individual basis which makes guarentees they will pick on us all!

Can’t see our gaffer letting me work part-time elsewhere, it’s not that type of organisation. More like do it or ‘F’ Off if you know what I mean!

Was talking about the hauliers for Morrisons and Asda being Salvesons and the other one but not entirely sure.

Worked at Asda falkirk recently as well.

Somebody will be along to let you know exactly who pulls for who and if experience is necessary.

As mentioned before I struggled a bit but Sommerfield was a great place to learn, bloody nightmare as you couldn`t swing a cat in some places never mind a trailer.

Being more confident now and thinking back I wish I had just typed hauliers into yell.com and phoned the lot.

Well done and good luck.

I hated rigid work and have never regretted doing my class 1 its been a great decision, far happier.

Sorry just thinking I might have lost you but the Supermarket chains i.e. Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and others dont do their own deliveies but employ Hauliers like Salveson, Stobarts, Wincanton, DHL and such like to run their transport.

As I say someone will be able to let you know who does what for who.

Salvos have a place on Drum Ind Est in Birtly they took over the myson contract from Simpson Bros a few years ago

Not sure who is recruiting in the area at the mom though have you tried looking in the yellow pages to find a list of companies and phone them them then follow it up by calling in

Fowler Welch take on new drivers they are in Washington now

Salvesen`s have a depot at Middleton St George - who are you working for at the moment ■■

Try RB @ Borobridge

Do you know if Asda will take inexperienced drivers via the agency and what the pay is?

Nah, I know a lad who left our place to work for Hargreaves, he was back at our place within 8 weeks lol!

Can’t remember what the pay was like, but my first ever commercial shift was at the ASDA CDC through Driver Hire.

I was only 21 with 4 years military LGV experience, everyone knows military experience doesn’t count for anything, but it seemed to be good enough for ASDA.

Asda Portbury refused to use me with a new class 1 on agency. Stuff them I said, (or words to that effect  ) 2 days later I got this gig, perm on euro work

Good luck finding something decent. You worked out if you’re a tramper, a trunker or a day-cab type person yet? Everyone’s happiest in a job that suits them, I’d go out of my tiny little mind on day work, but tramping or night trunks are right up my alley. Agency will give you a chance to find out what you like.

hav you tried elddis in consett mate?, although i dont know what they are like to work for…pete

dont want to put a damper on your class 1 achievement but i live in County Durham and have to travel 17mile for work.Haulage companys in the area are still in the dark ages as far as wages are concerned.

That sort of distance wouldn’t bother me. Would be happy to travel upto in tyneside etc if I needed to in order to get a decent job.
