New Agency & Eddie Stobbart Ltd

So my first day with ESL and a new agency so here is my account…

Scope of work

Go to site A pick up Unit No. X and an empty Trailer and drive 30 miles north to Site B for induction.

Arrive at site A and get told by gatehouse that unit has already gone about an hour before you came

Waited a hour before they organized themselves and then took another Unit & Empty trailer to Site B

Site B get Inducted but not given a copy of the 30 page double sided document that I signed for to understand ESL procedure

Then get told should have collected a loaded trailer so then a 2.5 hour round trip plus journey up north. You have two drops and then return empty (how was I to know…if I was psychic then would have won the lottery by now  )

Back at Site A dropped empty trailer and took instructions only to be told to move the trailer to bay number 7 “and you should not have dropped it as you may have had a live load”…what is a live load…apparently one where you back up to the bay and get loaded. Finally get delivery notes which specify two drops.

Finally took loaded trailer to do my day job 4 hours later from start time….

First delivery…took a walk to location as bit unsure…lucky as it prepared me where I was parking up and once tipped how I would be reversing back and then corner into a street and off you go….A bit nervous but managed it and felt good about myself.

Second delivery…arrived almost 2 hours early (awesome planning) and told to go away and to come back in an hour. Did so, easily tipped…but took almost an hour to get delivery notes signed…

Home time or so I thought….planner rings me…now can you pop over 30 odd miles away and pick up a load……really I have had enough now and soon up on my hours as this will become a 15 hour day. You will be alright he says…I made my point but don’t think he cared a [zb] (I don’t normally swear)

Agency rang me to see if I can do next day…told him I haven’t finished today and stated that I only every wanted to do short shifts and a few days a week…think of the money he says (or all the extra I made for him)

Get back to base after 15.5 hrs no one has a clue what I do with unit and trailer…left it…did not fill it up…sent txt message to planner…no reply…

Thanks very much…will I be back…will they promise me a uneventful day with a reasonable time to get home…do I trust them…do they respect the profession…

Answers on a postcard…

Sounds like a fun first day haa haa!
Probably be easier now if you don’t have to go through the induction process again! That does seem an odd way to do things though your not inducted on health an safety etc yet?? but your can drag a wagon 30 miles up the road first

Joking aside works work hope it improves if you go back!

your a limper working for a company that uses limpers, hence…do only what you are told to do…never do what you think needs done.never show initiative, never think for yourself.you are being paid from the neck down.follow the induction to the letter, and also never deviate from any instructions.always be able to pass the buck, and always ask our traffic office what to do in every single situation as you have no say in anything other than to do as instructed.looks like the wrong vocation for you unless you sort out your mangina issues about working a full shift…your agency dont gve a toss when you want to work,or what length of shift you want…they just want a bum in a seat at starting time.
no doubt they will have you back as its the lead in to xmas.dont hold your breath in feb…

Basically what the dog says, as while’s he’s bunt, he ain’t wrong!

However I would add that IF it was a firm that you fancy loosing your limp at, I’d maybe reengage the neck muscles and stop drooling! :open_mouth:
This place clearly isn’t one of those, as the planner does not give an F about you, he was already in bullcrap (achieve objective) mode before he dialed you… :unamused:

As for short shifts, I doubt it leading up to Xmas.
As when the wheels aren’t turning, money isn’t roll in…

Now for the sensitive question, and consider your answer and anonymity before responding…
When you say you worked a 15.5 hour shift, what did you mean by that?

So what would happen if you refused to do the last job as it meant you working for more than 15 hours?

Awesome response and to be fair I followed it to a T until they stitched me up with the last task telling me a minute before I was making my way back to base…

Its funny as I have been in the IT business in the corporate world for over 20 years and now taking a back seat and onto semi-retirement, I have done all the developing colleagues, managing budgets, adhering to stats, project management so now really just want to be told what to do.

Is it too much for people to be up front and honest, and if you are now a multi national company then show some professionalism, you can learn a few things from small hauliers who have the personal touch.

I don’t have any issues about working a full shift as mentally I write off the day whenever I am working, but would like some respect and maybe a thank you which to be a fair most I have received from the majority of clients.

As I am also experiencing all the different types of work…come to realise don’t like curtain side work much, enjoy store deliveries even with a double decker, box trailers between internal depots are the easiest, waiting to be tipped and getting a delivery note signed is a pain, not finding work on my doorstep is frustrating at the moment as my 5 month license needs to extend to 12 months before most employers will take us newbies on.

And for the transport/planners…

Slavery was abolished quite some time ago … see reference The Modern Slavery Act 2015 is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It is designed to tackle slavery in the UK and consolidates previous offences relating to trafficking and slavery.

I say like the penguins in Madagascar “smile & wave” knowing there is no fuel in the ship!!

Probably I would pee off the agency and then no chance of work…I sucked it up on this occasion but would prefer to have clear knowledge of my expectations…

Total hours in/out then add another 2 hours travelling…

For the first hour or more sat in my car catching up on Marvels “The Flash!!”

So you mean 15.5 duty? And then 2 hours travel to home and back?

If so I would brush up on hours regs. However I am sure I misunderstand

Is there any cudos in saying you worked for Stobastards for a month without incident and would it get you a ticket to a better job?
