New A14

The stretch between Ellington (near Brampton Hut) and Swavesey (near Bar Hill) will open on Monday 9 December. Source: Hunts Post

They’ve done well.
A fine example of what we can achieve, given the backing.

Maybe they could move the gangs down to the A13, show them lazy ■■■■■■■■■ how to do it

It’s opening early because that stretch is on open land with no traffic management to get in the way.

We’ll still…

Be fighting the crush at Girton for another six months I reckon.

They’ll be 6 months ahead of the target date so they can collect the bonus for early comlpetion. As long as it’s not the same bunch that did the Newbury by-pass we’ll be ok.

Just had a look at the new route and it looks like it could be quicker to go on the old A14 if heading North on the A1, it joins the A1 a lot further North and will be quieter when the traffic heading for the M6 and M1 goes on the new road.

They’ll probably do what they did to the old A1 between Dishforth and Wetherby when the new road opened which was to dig up one carriageway with the thinking that if it’s not there it’ll cost nothing to maintain.

I read that they’re knocking down the flyover which goes over Huntingdon train station. No idea why

I read the same. Flyover by water tower coming down when A14 complete.

That actually makes sense. That flyover had a very dodgy strengthening job a few years ago when it started to crack up due to the unplanned volume of traffic, there is lots of steelwork underneath that is really just a bodge. There are also movement sensors and crack detectors…
The extra steelwork also reduced the headroom to 14’ 6" on the B1514 underneath it.

From what I’ve read and heard, they are knocking down the whole bit between godmanchester junction and spittals interchange, which is a little over 2.5 miles.

On the Spittals side of Godmanchester there will be a road leading onto the Huntingdon ring road by the bus station. It has been under construction for some time.
There will be another road Godmanchester side of Spittals that will go a short distance between Cambridgeshire Police HQ ( by the water tower) and the ambulance station, also being worked on for a while.
When the 2 roads are built the flyover will come down, they are already closing the road underneath on various nights to do survey work for the dismantling.

I’ve seen them recently doing tree clearance and groundwork’s either side of the 14 near water tower and wondered what was going on

I don’t know if many of you take interest in junction numbers but when this stretch opens there will be some junction number changes ( because there won’t be as many junctions as now).
Ellington becomes Junc 21
Brampton Hut J22
Godmanchester/A1198 J23 (used to be Spittals)
Swavesey J24
Bar Hill J25

All remaining junctions eastwards will stay unchanged.

It looks as if it might well become the A14(M).

That is the plan. The reason it is going to be designated just A14 in the intrim is to get it open.

Not a great pic, but you get the idea.
