Need suggestions for truck as a toy :-)

Another option … saw a couple of Strato 325 with the eurotech type cab, I assume they are 325 ■■■■■■■ & twin splitter anybody know for certain as these are silly cheap & with a ■■■■■■■ & eaton it’s gonna be like a bulletproof erf without the tupperware shell

I was driving one last week, and am having it on the 5th for full time. Its got the 11 litre 380 ■■■■■■■ in and the same roomy cab as you mention. I found it a good ride, easy to get in and out of, some good extras, and a comfy seat. The gaffer reckons its bulletproof, and the motor pulls like a train. Its also good on the juice Im told. And of course, they are mega cheap. The only things I dont like is the box, its an eaton 16 speed synchro thats rapidly reverting to crash, the twinsplit would be better, and the fact the mirrors and side glass seems to get dirty real quick in bad weather. Otherwise, Im happy with the motor. Hope this helps.

Mal.

I’ve absolutely NO idea how it would work out on weights, but have you thought about a rigid with a ‘crew cab’ (the sort used for vehicle recovery) and fitting a 5th wheel on that, pulling a single axle trailer? More comfort, better fuel economy.

Putting seats where the bunk used to be isn’t an ideal situation. They would probably have to be fitted sideways with the result that the driver and front passenger would keep having an elbow in the back of the head. It wouldn’t be much fun sitting in the back. Difficult to see anything unless you went for one of the very old Dafs with the side and wrap around rear windows.

As for the trailer, really you need to look for one built for volume rather than load. Something that was designed for the garment industry or suchlike. The type that I used to see many years ago on the back of a Transit under the old Class 4 Licence rules.

A popular concept in the States is to fit a ‘removeable’ 5th wheel to a pick-up and then tow an ‘artic’ mobile home. I’ve seen a couple in this country but they are few and far between.

If your thinking about touring and then ‘dropping’ the trailer to go sight-seeing, bear in mind that the parking areas for tourist spots often have height and/or width restrictions - not to mention weight restrictions.

Artic unit? No, total overkill - but best of luck.

Hi Mal,

Sounds good to me.
What year is your S.A. ■■

Maybe they all have the eaton 16 speed, I just assumed being british it would have the t/splitter.

Not too worried about keeping the windows clear in the wet, most of our time out in it will be summer & it’s not a daily driver. More like once or twice a month.

Is the dash similar to the iveco & the “extras” ■■ From what i remember, the iveco i used to drive for the O/D was a 340 & had the usual electirc windows, air seat & a fe other little gizmos. Shame there’s no aircon

Thanks for the reply

Hi Krankee,

The idea of a crewcab & 5th wheel is an option, but finding / building a trailer is going to be a mammoth task :open_mouth:

Why a garment trailer ■■ Probably not stable enough to carry a ton of car on it’s rear end & a standard 40’ box would be easier to find with a tail lift. I only need about 13’ panelled off at the back to carry the car (race car) & even then we may put a double bed over the bonnet to gain another 4’6. With another 4’ in front of the bed to complete the bedroom, that it still leaves 23’ for kitchen, bathroom & seating area (which is about the same as the coach we use now if you exclude the driving area.

TOTAL OVERKILL: Yes, i agree. But i could manage with my existing trailer & a £200 car to tow it. Or even build a small ■■■■■■ & fit the sink & cooker for cuppas etc. No, sorry, that’s not me   I love my coach (as i did the other 2) but want a new toy :stuck_out_tongue: I appreciate that in the haulage industry it’s all about doing the job economically & efficiently, but this is my PLAYTIME & if it costs me £70 in diesel to go racing where it would have cost £20 in the car … so what !!! We don’t have 2 or 3 week holidays abroad in the summer because our customers rely on us to be there, so the “overkill” costs are only what most of you spend on your hols

I can see your point about dropping the trailer & going on walkabout, but the idea was to be able to take our car in the back (or the van) & use this if ever we need to. Like a camper with a built in garage

Sorry if i seem like a fool … I AM … but when they plant me I hope I won’t have just been Mr. 2.4 chiuldren that slogged away all his life for the “security”

Every man to his own m8. it’s a bit of fun (plus I’m a sad old ■■■■ that misses driving them     )

Its a P reg ToyTown, and I believe theres a range of boxes that you can have fitted, they aint all got the Eaton 16 speed. Mind you, a good one might be a nicer drive, it’s just taht this particular box has seen better days! The equipment is like the Iveco I think, and all of it works OK, theres an elec sunroof also, mines got a CD and a fridge, but the gaffer fitted them!

Mal.

Now that is promising news Mal.

If a P reg one is still doing the work ok with a happy driver, then a M or N plate that’s not been abused too much should serve my purposes to a tee

Forgot completely about the elec sunroof, seem to remember the first time i saw it in a euro it was a real novelty :stuck_out_tongue: (little things please little minds like mine  ).

If i remember correctly, the one in trucktrader was a N plate for somethink rediculous like £1750 or so !! Supposed to be clean, tested & ready for work :open_mouth:

A magnum still appeals to me, but compared to a 3 year younger vehicle at half the price … sorta letting the heart rule the head :exclamation:
Any sensible, stable person would go for the S.A. … we’ll see :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Buy a Daf 95 Space Cab. There are some old ones knocking about and they’re quite cheap for the amount of truck that your getting. My Dad used to have one before he got his XF. The 95 is a brilliant truck and it never let him down. Get a DAF.

Hi Shaggy,

Yes a 95 spacecab would probbaly fit the bill if i can find a 330 pr 360 model at a sensible price. A lot of them seem to be 400’s & i have got this sorta mental barrier around 360   Hence … the 143 / 450 is out of the running & given the choice, i would take a 385 magnum over a 420 (500 mack isn’t even on the shopping list  )

We will see. It’s a horrendous time of year to try selling the coach, but if nothing happens before the new year, i will sit it out & wait for March / April. No panic as it’s only a toy.

Who’s got some good ideas for tarting it up ■■ We’re in the fortunate position of being signmakers, so vinyl graphics come quite easy to us … but our own work is always the hardest to design :unamused: Got any pics of nicely tarted 95’s shaggy ■■ Airbrushing pics on the side is not an option, not that clever

You can’t be that far from me if you’re in Lincs ■■ We’re only just the other side of Wisbech to you

Have a good xmas all

Trailer update.

We will be replacing some of our old trailers in the new year rolling in from February, allegedly. The down side is that all the old trailers are being sold in bulk to the same company. Don’t know who that is or a contact but will keep asking in the new year and post any information or contact details that I can get.

Hi Wiretwister,

thanks for that.

If you do hear of there buyer, i would appreciate a shout.

Have a good xmas

John

Toytown.

Got to speak with the man responsible for the disposal of the old trailers today. There are some obsticles that have been put in the way and the only way that he can or will proceed is for me to give him your contact details, they will be passed on to the company buying the trailers from us. I know this is probably not what you have chosen but 2 guys have been sacked for, shall we say, “undue benefits” in the past. This way neither my contact or I will have any direct invlovement in any deal that is made in the future. This is a commercial requirement for my contact and not negotiable.

Just to give you some idea the trailers are at least 10 years of age, and as such the insulation will not be as effective as that used today. the 12M boxes all have 3/4 length ways dividers (permanent fixtures) and roller shutter doors to the rear. The generators, fridge units and taillifts will be staying on the trailers. In short they are most likely to be sold as seen so the usual “buyer beware” caveat should be applied. A rough figure for these trailers is £500 for an 8M and £2000 for a twelve.

If you want me to give your details for forwarding I would suggest a private message with a name, address and phone number, which I will only use for this purpose.

Once again I must re-interate that neither my contact or I will be involved, or held responsible, for any subsequent deal that you make as a result of this.
