So I have an assessment and interview for a class 2 job on Thursday, However, I don’t know if I should request a days holiday, which if denied wouldn’t look great if I rang in sick to attend. I’ve worked at the site before for 6 months on agency and really enjoyed the work, sods law just a month after I left there to take a full time job elsewhere, job vacancies became available for which I applied and got a call today. Has anyone been in a similar situation and what would you do?
very similar situation, it happened last Friday when I went for an interview for an haulage company and got the job (class 2). Simply I said on Thursday that I was not very well and that’s it. every other lies can or cannot work, but too risky, so I went for the easiest one. ![]()
good luck

I would just be straight and tell them you need time off for an interview…they don’t own you,.and you won’t be the first to have left for another job.
Can’t see a problem.

They probably won’t be bothered either. Next mug in, if he can speak English, that’s a bonus.
Thanks for the replies. I know honesty is the best policy and all that, but doesn’t stop me feeling bad about the whole thing however I go about it. Probably stupid I know…
I’m not the first and won’t be the last I’m sure.

As a bonus sometimes that’s when your manager announces he is willing to pay you more dollar or you find out they don’t think much of you and even let you go without giving a weeks notice

Your interview will most likely include a driving assessment. So you’ll need to use your card.
Another vehicle from a different fleet will be recorded on it on the day you were “sick”.
All fine and well if you take the job but should you not you’re going to have to go back to your employer and quite possibly be caught out as a liar.
Good jobs i’ve gone for the new employer is usually flexible so interview can take place at an agreeable time, dropping a present employer in the mire to attend interview won’t impress the new one, if it does that tells you a lot about the place you are looking to move to.
Also assessment drives have taken place after the job has been initially offered for obvious reasons, if the potential employer can’t be more accommodating then i’d be wondering if the job was all that good at all.
Surprising that after 6 months working somewhere that you didn’t know that the firm would be looking for FT employees in the near future, or that you hadn’t asked about the possibility of FT work before applying elsewhere, fairly simple questions to ask of other drivers and whichever level of management you dealt with on a daily basis.
With both my current and previous FT jobs, a number of drivers, supervisors/foremen had suggested at various points whilst working as agency that I apply/ talk to the TM about going FT. My current job, they offered, my wife wanted the guarantee of a regular income regardless of the fact it involves more hours and less money, so I accepted.
No idea about your level of communication before going to your current job, if you’d been asking about FT work before taking it with nothing positive coming back then you may well not who/ what they want for whatever reason(s), telling your current employer of a matter of weeks that you already want to move isn’t going to do you a great lot of good in the near future at least, but if you really do then best to get out sooner rather than later.

That happened to me (pay offer not the no weeks notice
) I was offered a job with TSA while working for Scanfreight Colchester, asked them for a reference and they offered me an incentive to stay…which I did.
I don’t know what some of you are bothered about, there is little loyalty left in the job, most firms today look upon you as an arse on a driving seat, not a family member or something
, and could not give a flying one whether you leave or not.
There are plenty of drivers about despite all the shortage ■■■■■■■■, and they all know that.
Be honest and tell them you need time off for an interview,as already said dont make stuff up as it might bite you on the bum.
If your honest and do get the job and leave for the new gig being upfront and saying to the old gaffer “if it doesn’t work out is there a job here to come back to?”.
I’m sure if they are local to each other gaffers know each other and gossip gets about dont want to P off 2 firms and be stuck between them both and no job,but drastic but you know what I mean.

Yes this is also an issue I am aware of and yes it does include an assessment
Your employer leases your labour, it’s up to you who you lease it to and for how long.
If you tell your firm that you’re looking for a new job and they put you on ■■■■ detail, that’s a ■■■■ good sign you need to leave anyway.
