Little bit about me
Passed car test in December 2014 (Aged 34 Yes left it late lol) ,Was doing security until I left to work for Harveys so did 7.5t test in September last year for Concorde Logistics (Harvey’s Furniture) so got experience doing home deliveries to some really good locations around the UK and some real tight places. Then passed my Class 2 in April this year and just done nearly 3 Months delivering for Palmer and Harveys. Job and half that is, ■■■■■■ shop locations and hard graft but fun and good experience non the less. Now 2 days ago I passed my class 1 test and I’m at a loss as to what to do. I’ve applied for Samworth Brothers as they are taking on new class 1 drivers and the new warehouse they are building is 2 mins up the road from me (Lucky me) but if that don’t amount to anything I’m unsure on the best way to go.
I see myself having two options one finding a company like Samworth Brothers who will take me on and give me all the training I’d need to get better at what I’ll be doing or go LTD Company and going agency route and learning that way.
If you have any advice on what in your opinion would be a better move for me then please comment below.
Thanks in advance

Avoid going limited mate, there’s really no need and it’ll only amount to a major headache. There ARE companies that will give you a chance, the best thing to do is to go in person to the yards and ask to have a chat with the transport manager. If they are unable to help, ask them if they might be kind enough to point you in the direction of local firms that you may be able to get a shot with.
Or you could still go the agency route, but I’d seriously advise doing so via PAYE rather than LTD or umbrella, far simpler.
Best of luck to you mate

Hi thanks for the reply. Gotta admit LTD seems like an headache to me. I’ve got an interview with one company who use wag and drag who will actually train me up. At a loss still never had so many options before lol
Options are a fantastic thing mate, gives you opportunity to pick and choose a little bit, if you need to hold back from the step up for a while to find the right job then don’t sweat it. You’re far better off finding a full time job, with a decent firm who will give you time to learn the job properly and not stick the boot in when things go ■■■■ up.

I’ve just turned down a class 2 job days paying 12ph 8am-5pm on agency long term work as well I must be mad. But it’s not where I see myself at all though I’ve had enough of doing shop deliveries in ■■■■■ locations with ■■■■ poor parking ect…
So far I’ve managed to apply for Samworth Brothers and DPD who are taking on new drivers near me. Got an small chat with a guy at Crowfoot Carriers that’s for night work and wag and drag easy work I think.
I’m just not in any rush do anything, Gotta find something that benefits me long term.
I can understand why you’re keen to move up the ladder mate. Just be aware that driving an artic doesn’t always mean you avoid the awful store drops. I’ve done plenty and it can be a true nightmare.
Best of luck.

I appreciate that but I doubt it’s the same as what I was doing at Palmer and Harveys lol

I never had a cam facing me was always facing the front of the truck and some on sides and odd one on the back if it worked. Tbh I only used the reverse cam once and that was because I had to back the truck up to a brick wall for one drop.
The money is great, The ballache that is delivering to stores is rubbish. The experience in driving the trucks was class due to the locations. Best one I had was having to reverse up an incline between two brick walls then I had to manoeuvre it around at the top to avoid a 20-30ft drop over what was once a wall one of the other PH drivers had knocked down. You get the truck to the doors then you can’t get the cages into the store because the ramp you have to push the cages up was crap. Had another where it was so tight to get the truck down reversing it that once I had reversed it in I had to squeeze through the tightest of gaps to get to the back of the truck. Then got moaned at cause it was on a pallet and not a cage.
Supposed to be one point delivery but you’ll be expected to stick certain stuff in certain places, Some stores won’t allow cages in so your hand balling it in through the front door to where they want it, other shops won’t even have a ramp and you can’t get the cage over the step to get it into the store. Some shop owners will watch you unload it all in the place then go count it out to make sure they got what they ordered despite you counting it in front of them.
I’m gonna say only go there if you like hard physical graft. You don’t do much driving, Well I did not do much from Cov depot. For me living in Leicester and Driving to Cov everyday it became a bore. 12h days turn to 15h with traffic. I was late most days cause I could not for the life of me get up if I had a really early start.
But it was an experience and one I’m glad I did because I feel it helped me breeze my class 1 test last week also when you come out with £1933 for basic +5h overtime it’s worth the wage to some degree.
Edit: Found a picture of the drop with the incline lol

Some seem quite happy with P&H, while most of us think it was crap! But it’s experience and a step on the ladder…
As already said, just because you’re moving up to artic’s, doesn’t mean that’s the end of store deliveries, or even the end of store deliveries with crap parking/access. One Stop up the road from me deliver in artic’s, although the trailers are urban’s. And they deliver to all the same crappy little shops as P&H do. The money is good though, as it’s 34k a year. But not the job for me, as i’m allergic to hard work.
Or rather if I can find a job that pays similar and doesn’t involve hard graft, it’s an no brainer…

Yeah seen as few artics at the places I’ve delivered to for one stops. Easy that is you just roll off the cage lol.
I’m not shy of hardwork but like you if I can avoid it i will do.

wow you had to get a tight turn in at the top as well , starting to worry if I can do this after all lol
First time I did it I left it near where it is now and unloaded it. 2nd time I was like it’s going to the back door now of the shop lol.
Just be patient and take your time. Never rush anything when it comes to stuff like that.
It’s good experience but the jobs crap and in Coventry they are having massive issues with warehouse staff not having ■■■■ loaded or its on pallets and not cages.

They load providing the warehouse pull their finger out as been known that some drivers have loaded themselves. You unload cage/pallet off truck then take it to store front/back and if you can’t get cage in you handball it from door. If you can get cage in you still unload it where they want it and cage count the stuff lol.
