Need a start!

Hello all. Passed my Cat C 4 weeks ago and today I am delighted to say I passed my C+E in Norwich at the first attempt also. Now I can’t wait to get out on the road and continue to learn and gain experience as a driver. I haven’t got any work lined up yet, but was thinking of visiting a few of the local hauliers in Norfolk to see if anyone will give me a start. Any advice anyone may have with regards to getting a job would be most welcome.

Well done on the pass, can’t offer you any advice on a job as I’m not from over that way, U will find something though, well done again and good luck with the job hunt.

You get both for that -

OK, so I’ve got a couple of “interviews” lined up next week, both with decent local outfits and both class 1 jobs. I’m obviously delighted that they’re both prepared to meet me. I’m assuming that they’ll probably want me to do some kind of an assessment drive if they’re serious about taking me on. I’m not too fazed by this, but I’m curious about a couple of things. Firstly, will they expect me to check the vehicle over before taking it out? Secondly, will I need to use my digital tacho card. I’m guessing the answer to both is yes? Any useful tips or advice anyone may have, most gratefully received.

Firstly congratulations and secondly good luck.

I’d be surprised if they don’t ask you to do an assessment drive and yes I would do a walk round.

Best advice I can offer is to be the kind of person you’d want to employ. It’s not rocket science, someone clean and smart, pleasant - it gets you a long way ahead of the bloke in trackies with a bad attitude.

One of my roles is conducting such assessments. If anyone didn’t do a proper walk round check and use the tacho they wouldn’t go any further - simple.

You may be told the vehicle has already been checked so “no need to bother”. Acknowledge that but still do a quick walk round for your own satisfaction. Regulation states that the vehicle must be checked by a responsible person - doesn’t say checked by the driver. However, it’s the driver’s neck on the line if anything goes wrong.

So occasionally I’ll say to a prospective new driver “it’s all been checked” but I expect an abbreviated walk round to take place.

Hope this helps and best of luck with the appointments.

Thanks for the advice gents. I was thinking I should do a walk round check regardless of what they say, for as you said Pete, it’s my neck on the line as the driver.
