I have seen a similar prang to the overtaking video on the M5 a few years ago. A bloke in a 4x4 hoofing it down the outside lane at touching 80 mph with a nice looking two axle job. The weave starts as he’s overtaking some trucks in front of me and sure enough the van flips and is obliterated.
Why don’t these pricks ever learn? His wife was understandably furious. No one injured but there was debris all over the first two lanes and hard shoulder.
This must have been below Taunton , not too far from the tourist spots in Devon and Cornwall, so why hammer along on your holiday like that?? It was a write off.
Land Rover with jackknifed trailer blocking the outside lane NB on the M5 this afternoon. Seemed to have taken a detour down the central reservation to meet and greet the barrier first. .

Where do all the dead caravans go that get wrecked on the road, reason for asking is I still need a replacement Alko stabilized hitch for my wobble box but too mean to spend nearly £300 on a new one, or/and a plate that goes behind the tow ball for a stabilizer bar on a standard one.
I had the old style anti-snake bar, upside down leaf spring on adjustable clutch style horizontal stabiliser (see pic). Very simple design, easy to set, easy to test, easy to fit.
Problem with ‘alko’ style hitches, they don’t work if there’s any grease on the tow ball etc.

Got one of them but not the car attachment plate, brand new Alko tow ball so no grease on it, might go see if I can find the plate in a scrappie somewhere.

come on ray , hand in pocket time . sod the alko get yourself a winterhoff , i put one on mine last year bought on the internet from a firm down somerset , about 245 quid if i remember right . stabiliser pads built in so no need for attachments on the car . cheers , dave
yea, suppose I will have to bite the bullet and buy a new one from somewhere. Pity cos me old van had the Alko hitch but then got a newer van which surprisingly hasn’t. Never had the chance to swap them over.
it’s worth it if you have a decent caravan , the winterhoff comes with a complete fitting kit and you can buy a case hardened lock that fits on when you travel or when parked up . it’s surprising how many caravans get nicked when people stop at services for a brew so you need to take precautions . shouldn’t be any problem to rich folks north of the border affording such things , apart from a natural reluctance to spend money . tin hat on , dave
The best stabilizer by far was the Trapezium, it moved the point of pivot to just infront of the rear axle of the towing vehicle and you could reverse it just like a fith wheel. A bit scary at first as the caravan etc would drift slightly off line if a large truck etc overtook you but the towing vehicle stayed put, the ball assembly was free to move from side to side on needle roller bearings. I had one for years, then it was found that they didn’t meet EU regulations so they stopped producing them! Still doesn’t help with an overloaded/badly loaded caravan though.
Pete.

Try the Caravan Centre, Blaenavon, South Wales.01495 792700. He breaks caravans, and does mail order.
Thanks for that, will give them a call in the morn.
I have just changed the car to a 2015 KX4 Kia Sportage and it has some system built in that detects when the tail wags the dog by applying brakes to the wheels as the wag starts, we have just got back from a week on Dartmoor and I must say this is the best tow car I have had ,far better than a BMW 120d ,BMW X3 3 litre and BMW 320d Touring , but the fuel consumption is crap ,its only doing 31.7 mpg towing ,its booked in to go on the computer to see if there is a fault as it should be doing 41 mpg.
You don’t say what you were dragging behind you though.
I have seen it before, but I would love to know what was said to the hgv driver, even though the hgv driver had proof I bet the wobble box driver still tried to blame him for it
41mpg towing… Must run on fairy dust

Still good fun to watch though. Even better in slowmo…

Yes, someone’s holiday home, savings and nerve shot in 30 seconds and it’s 'fun to watch. '. Knuckledraggers unite, you have a new leader. You sir are a [zb]!
although we all make mistakes ,he should have realised he was not going to make it and backed off,but with most car drivers they are too pigheaded, his own fault and he paid for it,simple
Do I see a very very ‘much against wobble boxes and car drivers’ type of trucker here, do you Sir, think you own the road and for your exclusive use ?

Its the same caravan we bought new in 2009 , its an Avondale Mayfair and weighs 1 1/2 tons ,5.45 meters long.

I must admit that I find even 31mpg a bit hard to believe, never mind 41mpg!

Avondale are good vans, 5 or 6 years ago we bought a Landranger but had to get a bigger tow car for it so bought a 3 year old Daewoo Muuso and was lucky to get 25mpg with that outfit
