Just a Question. In the theory test when a question gives one possible answer is the “near side mirror”, this is the mirror that is on your left hand side (the one closet to the sidewalk), not the mirror closet to you (which would be the right hand side mirror)?
SKA the near side mirror is the passenger side one.

Without wishing to point to any particular individual, it is not uncommon for persons suffering from a mild form a dyslexia to have difficulty assimilating left/right, nearside/offside. Where such difficulties are identified there are a number of ways of varying teaching techniques to accommodate such people.
For example, using the terms, Kerbside mirror and Overtaking mirror, might work with some, whereas, squares of coloured paper in the peripheral vision, might work with others. Red mirror/Blue mirror.
Or simply stating that, “You always check the mirror relative to the next movement of the steering wheel” will work for others.
It is a very broad subject which trainers should have an awareness of, and many of whom will have anecdotal examples of varying methods that have proved successful.
ska, best of luck. Check out the advice regarding the Hazard Perception Test, which is where most people fall foul.
