One of A Stevens backed under a Parkway Haulage trailer in Parkways yard next to BSC at Grangetown. Stevens did a bit of subby work, especially when Parkway were doing a lot of pipe out of BSC up to Wick , not very nice loads as they were 4 pipes wide and stacked 4 high, top two middle ones often moved in transit. If i recall think one of Parkways with one of these loads got blown up after the Electric board had redone some power lines and were hanging a little bit lower this was after they had been running up there for a couple of months.
Did a lot of second man with Stevens as they specialised with long loads out of Lackenby. My father and uncle drove forArthur Sandersons who became part of Durhams in the 70,s, welcome to Trucknet by the way.

Castellon:
Much appreciated! I was at Econfreight myself, for a time in the early 90’s.Is Gil still doing a bit? Haven’t seen him in over a year.Last time he was doing some part time work for Jentone (Les Harriman’s daughter),on Teesdock.I remember the early days at Carlisle Bros.Gil ran the workshops,& Ernie, his brother ran the haulage side. There were only about 5 or 6 drivers. Was a good job, tho’!

Castelon, I’ve sent you a pm.

Thanks for the welcome,& thanks for the pic of the Steven’s Volvo.I was friends with John Loughran on there. He bought his own wagon when Stevens folded. He was still pulling steel. As his two lads grew up,they got into haulage. Both have their own trucks now.Think John retired.Little Derek (can’t remember his surname!) was at Stevens,a real Yorkshire trucker! And Jack Gatenby was the fitter.Jackie Gibson is another name, from that area.So many things you forget, then come flooding back! I know it’s an old cliché,but trucking then, hard as it was,was better.Lads from all the different local companies, had time for each other.Walk into Norman’s,at Normanton, and you’d know most of the drivers in there!Always someone to have a chat and a catch up,with, while you had your breakfast!

Yes remember John Loughran he would have an F88 at the time the picture of the F10 was taken which was driven by my friend Andrew Simpson who sadly passed away about 5 years ago. My father who worked for Sandersons went into BSC Lackenby on the trailer scheme late 70’s until he retired loading the haulage firms trailers firstly rod mil, coil rod mill, then later beam mill so he was in contact with John and his sons a lot.
I am from Great Ayton and know Jack Gatenby well, you will probably know his brother Kenny who worked for Stockton Haulage for years, unfortunately Kenny passed away about a month ago with the dreaded Covid as far as i know.

Second man job down to Camberley first F88 driven by Frank Camsfield second F88 is John Loughrans.

So sad to hear the news about Ken Gatenby.I knew him very well,he was a good lad,and we always got on very well.I’m quite shocked by that news! Such are the times! I also knew Ken & Jacks older brother,Les.He was a real character! Not sure if he’s still with us.Thanks for all the news!
