I was on the M4 today coming from from Tenby in Wales and I was doing 75mph in the middle lane over-taking a couple of lorries and cars. This lorry, all of a sudden, pulled out and was going the same speed as me. Was a Volvo FH. I think. Maybe a FM. 440. Are you able to take the limiter off?

Hi Kevin, the answer to your question is yes & no. Certainly not legally, however with all things mechanical/electronic, they do sometimes fail.
If the limiter had failed and/or been tampered with, the driver is still bound by the speed limit on that particular road for his vehicle. i.e. On a motorway 60 for a truck and 70 for a car/light van
Also this “all of a sudden” is one of the most often used phrases on insurance claim forms. Rarely does anything happen on the road “suddenly”… the clues to what is about to happen are always there if you know how to look for them.
i was on the limiter the other night at 56 and saw a truck in my mirrors approaching rapidly…as it zoomed by at at least 70 i was expecting to see irish plates…but no!!!..it was a D reg ERF!!!
A couple of weeks ago,i was an hour into my day with everything going fine.
Stopped for DERV and when i drove off, noticed that the odometer wasn’t working and on further inspection that the Digi Tacho had ‘frozen’.
Rang in and was told that an appt. would be made and head for nearest maindealer.
I was in the middle of nowhere and drove on country/A-roads for an hour until i got to dual carriageway then watched the speedo go past 90k’s and kept going, the limiter had been disabled aswell.
It was a good feeling to be totally in charge of the vehicle i was driving for a change and brought back memories of how enjoyable lorry driving used to be.

That happened to me too - I was right on the limiter and I was overtaken by a Dutch TNT artic, made me look like I was standing still

That saying is also on the roadcraft video/dvd
Isn’t it any vehicle registered 1987 onwards that has to be fitted with a speed limiter?
If I am correct, then the D reg DAF does not require a limiter.

Speed Limiters
Speed limiters must be fitted to goods vehicles exceeding 3500kg maximum gross weight if they are capable of a speed (when unladen) in excess of 60mph (vehicles up to 12,000kg), and 56mph (vehicles over 12,000kg) as follows.
- Goods vehicles exceeding 7500kg maximum gross weight first used from 1 August 1992.
- Goods vehicles exceeding 12,000kg maximum gross weight first used from 1 January 1988.
- Goods vehicles exceeding 3500kg maximum gross weight but not exceeding 7500kg maximum gross weight first registered after 1 January 2005 when used for national and international operations by 1 January 2005 and when solely used on national operations by 1 January 2008.
- Diesel/LG/Natural Gas engined goods vehicles exceeding 3500kg maximum gross weight but not exceeding 7500kg maximum gross weight first registered after 1 January 2005 when used for national and international transport operations by 1 January 2005 and when used solely for national transport operations by 1 January 2008.
- Diesel/LG/Natural Gas engined goods vehicles exceeding 3500kg maximum gross weight but not exceeding 7500kg maximum gross weight first registered between October 2001 and 31 December 2004 except vehicles fitted with Euro II or earlier engines.
hope that answers your question
I think there was a problem with the northbound carriageway of the m6, maybe a bump or something on it because on a Friday night doing the trunks back up the road a lot of speed limiters used to seem to break on that stretch of road on a Friday night

i bet ROG is spitting feathers that you beat him to it copying and pasting that info
I’d get ready to duck as the ‘mind driving’ book will probably be coming your way at some speed aimed at your head

You have admitted on an open forum that YOU were speeding…If Truck drivers put on here every time they see a car speeding then this site would crash!!!
Cars should have limiters set at 70mph and NO more…
While we’re on the subject of speeding trucks if the people running above the 56mph got stopped by VOSA wouldnt they be screwed big time? So why run the risk? Cant say your limiters failed if you tachos read 70mph for the last 28 days
I know most of them are privatley owned vehicles but what about the company ones? surely they would care if they got a summons through for illegaly speeding vehicles that should be limited

that’s funny. I just posted about this on the oldest truck post. He passed me like I was stood still on the M20!

you are correct,i can remember clearly working as a mechanic for ryder truck rental at the time speed limiters had to be retro fitted to all the trucks in the fleet.the cut off was e reg,(january 1988)i think,so any e reg"s registered between august to january didnt need them, but after january did.i can also remember many customers not wanting to take the new powerliner mercs (with limiters),but wanting the old c,d,e, reg"s with no limiters fitted.
