Nationwide

Does anybody know anything about Nationwide Platforms, part of the Lavendon Group. They’re looking for drivers and wondering if I should apply.

I don’t know anything about them but, if you’re looking for a start, give it a go.

Yeah, they’re looking for drivers but there’s no details of wages, hours or the like.

That’s the same as any company you won’t know till you go. The way the markets is I would rather waste an hour and go see than base my chances on what another person says .

If you don’t ask you don’t get. Going in and chatting to somebody gives you a chance to make a good impression while finding out the pay, hours, what the job entails etc.

Much better to go in and shake some hands than it is to just talk on a phone.

This is so true. It’s too easy to get a false impression on the phone - also to ignore someone. But face to face the conversation has to take place.

Really important to go and bang on the door and talk to the appropriate person - - and don’t take NO for an answer.

I’ve recently started working for them as a driver/operator in their specialist vehicles division (truck mount MEWP).

If you are you looking to do this then I can give you a little bit of insight into the type of work and what to expect, but if you are looking at the delivery side then this is a bit different to what I do.

Would love to know what you can tell me as all I can find is the usual company websites stuff.

Too early from my point of view to give you any details as to whether or not they are a good company or not to work for, or comparing them to other companies since I am new to driving (at least partly for my job) for a living.

As I stated, there a two distinct jobs that you can take-up and I have only limited time in one and practically no knowledge of the other.

Sorry I can’t be much help to you, but there’s no point describing my job and experience if it is irrelevant to what you are considering.

I was looking at the class 1 jobs they’re advertising

I thought you might be looking at that sort of position. Different to what I do so I could only tell you only what applies to me.

What I will say is that even if you don’t have all the ‘must haves’ ignore this in my experience and just go. I don’t yet have class 2 even though the advert states this is a must. I can’t really add anymore than what the advert states that you have already read.

Think I’ll give it a go then…

I would be interested to know how you get on if you do.

As far as I am concerned and understand, the work that I do can be quite financially rewarding if you are willing to put the hours in, over and above the standard 40 hour week. Certain times of the year such as the colder months means that business is a little slower, but picks up significantly the warmer it gets. The self-propelled side is the same I have been told, even though these can be used indoor.

Good luck and I hope that it is well worth your time.

Long hours and full of h/s bull can’t say anything about the pay but I got to their yard by me and I dread being sent there

How come?

For starters they supply access machines and the flooring surface is horrible it seems to be a theme with access yards I much prefer plant

I worked for Nationwide a while ago.

I can tell you the job has it’s ups and downs.

I went through a series of highs and lows when I was there.

I know what they do but am looking to find out more about working for them. Are they decent employers? Decent hours? Decent money? Any benefits?

I did some agency work for the a few years ago. Didn’t know the tacho regs and ended up having a barney with the guy over the phone. He wanted me to do a 400+ mile round trip from Aberdeen to Wick and back, with an extra collection in Inverness on the way back.

Didn’t stay there for long.

Transport at Nationwide is apparently now all run by Wincanton, so no longer in house.

Wincanton. …not sure if that’s a good thing or bad though
