National Categories "g" and "h"

Hello,

Does anyone know of anywhere where someone can practice in a vehicle that would be listed as either a Category “g” (Road Roller) or Category “h” (Tracked Vehicle) vehicle?

In addition, what sort of vehicles would be classified as Category “g” and/or “h”?

maybe the armed forces, the TA or suchlike?

I think the DSA publish a guide similar to the LGV one for these vehicles which should be of some help.

Got my group “h” in the army as a tank driver.

ditto. spent 3 years at 3 div with an armoured squadron so i had to do it. then i got involved with the maintenance/repairs. glad to be out of it

Would an earth mover be classed as a tracked vehicle ? I am sure it would be.

i think it would be. i think you need cat h plus certificates for plant machinery obviously relating to the type of equipment

I think that you need cat H to drive the huge tracked farm tractors.

Years ago in Top Gear magazine one of the staff writers went somewhere and did his roller test in an 8t machine or similar, I think he he did the track laying vehicle test with the military.

I’ve got the whole set of mags and I’ll have a shuffle through and see if I can find it.

what badge were you? i had a mate in the REME who moved to Ashford when he left

scanny77, I was a drop short, gun bunny, plank or what ever other nicknames we had, been out since 84, they wouldn’t have dared let me near any spanners

If it has tracks, and is steered by those tracks ie by the tracks moving at different speeds when cornering.

But it does tend to wind the highways agency up if you go down the road on a D8 and break up the road surface :stuck_out_tongue:

Dont these spurious classes on your licence entitle you to drive a lawnmower or summat :astonished:

f,k,p is tractor, vehicle controlled by a pedestrian (mowing machines, vehicle controlled by pedestrians), and moped

as far as i can see, P is completely pointless, unless a 16 year old wants to ride a moped without L plates.

i notice some of the older folk have l,n as well, but ive no idea what that is

remember reading somewhere that it might be electric vehicles, or invalid carriages or something, but i assume that has now been broken down into another category.

That is the definition as described in your driving licence,“A tracked vehicle, steered by it’s tracks”

By earth mover,do you mean a scraper,the big wheeled thingy,or a bulldozer?
