Narrow Lanes Motorways

…I don`t know about you guys, but I use the M25/M1Herts quite regularly.
My recent experience is that I have seen more near misses in these sections than anywhere else, due to a myriad of reasons. But, more importantly it is always these sections that have hold-ups due to accidents, even the traffic announcers on R2 state this fact, or use a tone of voice that intimates ‘here we go again’

As for myself whilst driving through these sections, it makes me feel uncomfortable…I am mostly able to contain the vehicle within the lines, but others don`t seem so able and wind makes it difficult at times…However, I did have a sneezing fit in one of these sections, how I did not have contact with another vehicle is beyond me, just lucky I guess.

Anyways, my point is…That these lanes need to be done away with, as they actually contribute to accidents/incidents and cause more time delays than a wider two lane carriageway would.
And it would be nice if there was some consistancy regarding the width of the lanes throughout any given section and clear signage at a decent height, for when there is congestion, this would allow car drivers to see the signage, thus enabling them to make better decisions about when to join the nearside lane.

I wonder if there are statistics out there, that would prove that these sections are dangerous, because it certainly feels that way to me.

the problem isn’t helped by people who sit in the wrong lane. they sit side by side for some reason. this is when they bump into one another.
having a big motorway full of southern nancies dosn’t help.

Absolutely and this leads to frustration and anger, which I am sure, in turn leads to more accidents :imp:

There has to be a better method…

Your joking right!! How long you been driving? Those slips were notorious for accidents because they were a bad design! There are enough lanes to handle the traffic volumes but for how long? If the driving test was much tougher and everyone retested every 5 years say! Then half the carp that goes on wouldn’t!! And as for southern nancies!! Bring it on Brummys!! :grimacing:

what have carp got to do with motorways?

Havent you not noticed the new fishing lakes along the M1 stretch on both sides!! Carp city in there!

Nothing, they live in the potholes on the A5

Mate, if you think the M1 from Northampton to Luton is bad you want to try the Autobhan to Bremen. I stopped doing European work for five years and when I went back they were still on with it.

I have a pal who does Backflips on a FMX Bike for a living, he drove up to Hamburg in his van to do a show and even he said the worst part of the trip was the ‘Narrow roadworks up to Bremen’.

Look well ahead and keep a big space in front…
