My overtaking-related comments

This is how I do it…

1.If I take a while to pull back in after overtaking you,it’s probably because you thought I shouldn’t need flashing. I’m waiting
because I don’t want to fill your windscreen with my tailgate.

  1. If we are the only 2 trucks on the road in the dead of night, you don’t need to flash me in,ok? Thanks anyway!

  2. If it’s very busy i’d like a flashing, so that I know when you’re comfortable for me to pull in, not because I don’t know the
    length of my truck.

  3. If the road is busy, and you’ve just taken 3 minutes to overtake me,please wait until I flash you in. That’s when i’m
    comfortable…ok?

  4. If you start to pull in too soon, i’ll either have to pull back (which I really don’t want to do) or move to the
    hard-shoulder (which I really don’t want to do). I don’t have a way of telling you…“not yet mate,stand by”…

  5. If you’ve flashed me in and I haven’t seen it,do it again please. My periferal vision is limited by the design of my eyeballs.

  6. I will always try to acknowledge a flashing-in, by flicking the left indicator again. If I don’t,it means I didn’t see the help,or that
    i’m busy doing something else.

How do you do it?

in bed :stuck_out_tongue:

sorry couldn’t help it

I’ll use the motorway for my example -

Pull into lane 2 before the minimum 2 second gap is reached - indicate at least 6 times if needed and before moving to lane line - once starting to cross line, cancel signal.

Cruise past, if it looked like a struggle in the first place then I don’t bother to overtake.

Once passed the truck (or whatever) wait for about 5 lane lines to be between my rear end and it’s front end - pull in without indicating - no point as the minimum safety gap has been achieved and it stops those {ZB]s behind from putting their foot down as soon as I put it on instead of waiting until I have moved over.

If the driver behind me cannot wait until I move over in a safe manner - tough :exclamation:

If another truck overtakes me and gets close to the minimum safety gap in front then i’ll flash - that rarely happens as they pull in too early and I am easing off - notice I did not say BACKing off - it’s a ‘mindset’ thing to use the word ‘back’.

How i do it!!! motorway style,
Approching a slower vehicle in the nearside lane…i will wait untill im about 150 yards away, then stick the offside flasher on, to warn other road users of my intentions to move out into the middle lane, but I realize the correct way is not going to work, even with the offside lane clear of traffic, a lot of drivers on the motorway cannot be arsed, to mirror, and move over for you,“I KNOW ITS NOT MY RIGHT OF WAY,BEFORE SOMEONE HAS A GO,” but, a bit curtisy wont hurt, So i change to the way i know works,

Approching a slower vehicle in the nearside lane…i will wait untill im about 150 yards away, then stick the offside flasher on, to warn other road users of my intentions to move out into the middle lane,BUT THEN, ALL THE CARS IN THE MIDDLE LANE, THERE FRONT END LIFTS AS THEY GUN IT,“TO SAY I DONT THINK SO!!!”, OHHH HOW WRONG THEY ARE,FIND THE NEWEST CAR IN THE LINE AND,GET THE BLINKERS ON AND GO FOR IT,AT THIS POINT I KNOW IN 5 SECONDS OR SO, WILL BE THE SOUND OF THE HORN,FOLLOWED BY THE ," DO YOU WANT COFFIE BEANS" HAND SIGNAL IN THE MIRROR…THEN BLOW THEM A KISS,OOOHHH THEY LIKE THAT,

Take it you’ll have your TNUK sticker(with username) on the back of your truck so we know it’s you and we can then follow your instructions as to whether to flash you in or not   :unamused:

We’ll stop at the next services and i’ll hand you the instructions (which you’ll have to sign for) :grimacing: :grimacing:

What i usually do is if i’m travelling at about 56mph and i see a truck on the motorway in the distance and i’m gaining slowly on him, maye he’s doing about 54/55 mph, then i pull out about half a mile before him and start to overtake. By the time i’m level with him he won’t let me past him and there will be a big queue behind me. I know that it is him that won’t let me past as there is no way i would ever get this wrong, and i’ve just taken 15 minutes at the side of him to crawl past so i know i’m slightly faster than him. When our cabs get level i give a beep on the horn so he looks at me, then i wave my arms around as if to say whats he playing at. He’ll generally shrug and sigh and then back off, so i pull in quick to let all the cars past as they are all getting impatient. And then he generally flashes me for about half a mile even though i’ve pulled back in and i’m on my merry way, i can still see him flashing me for ages. Some of them just havn’t a clue how to drive, as someone said…there’s drivers and screwdrivers

in my old motor doin 62-64mph, i pull out early enough to give me the chance to overtake with the driver seeing me, and if he doesnt flash me ino i av got a safe enough space to pull back over, or carry on to over take the next truck

in my truck now tha does 54mph -55mph , i rarely ovetake any1, but if need to do so i get a close (but safe) enough behind them wen i think am ready to pass indincate an go 4 it, if i think i cannot pass them then i hold back a bit

My limiter is set at 85km/h. The only things I overtake are Jessica’s Dad and mobile cranes. I try to overtake ethel and arthur who are doing 48mph but when I get level the noise of the fridge wakes them up and they speed up to 53mph. So I drop back in behind and acknowledge the coffee bean questions from the other drivers who were behind me.

i like to be flashed regardless of how busy it is, that way i know the other driver is happy with the braking distance i’m leaving. After all i don’t know whats on his truck, how heavy it is or how its been loaded. Agree with flashing a few times, can’t spend the whole time looking in the side mirror and some drivers will only give you one half second flash.

Not sure about the lots of indication, in theory the correct thing to do and fine on a quietish road but if its busy you see a gap that you plan to pull into, you put your indicator on well in advance to give it time to flash 6 times, the cars next to you either panic, slam on the brakes and cause a pileup, panic and swerve into the 3rd lane and cause an accident or just ignore you, and of course once the first one ignores you the rest of the sheep do.

Also the limiter is set quite high on my truck and i’m usually running reasonably light, so if i can time it with a long hill it makes it less painful :sunglasses:

“To Flash or not to Flash”

some “drivers” seem to think it is big and clever to see how close they can get to your nose when pulling in and then proceed to thank you with an over exaggerated display of indicator/hazard/fog lights, (even though they haven’t given you enough time/space to flash them in !!!)

  1. If it’s very busy i’d like a flashing,

Does that mean I have to wear my plastic mac?
