My options were limited on the A14. :(

I think I need to go to W H SMITHS and buy a new copy of the HIGHWAY CODE as I’m guessing now there is a section called ‘SUICIDAL MANOEUVRES’ :imp: :imp:

Let me explain… :open_mouth: :imp: :imp:

Driving down the A14 west bound, had just passed the junction for Huntington (the junction just before dairy crest on your right hand side i think)

Passed the junction, everything was fine, traffic moving freely cruising at about 53mph. Noticed a car broke down at the end of the on ramp, a classic car as it happened; it was off the slip road so to speak would not cause anybody any difficulty using the on ramp. Thought nothing of it.

Then just as I had taken my eyes off the broken down car I saw a flurry of brake lights ahead, knocked off the cruise control and began looking what the problem was as the road ahead of these cars was clear :exclamation:  ….then in a split second a car went from lane 2 and stopped on the what I suppose you would call the hard shoulder which is about 1.5ft wide :open_mouth: :open_mouth: . This car pulled up, cars swerved to avoid him and he then began to REVERSE against the flow of the traffic towards the on ramp :exclamation: :exclamation: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:  .

I was like WTF, it all happened ever so quick within spit second I had cars behind me cars in the second lane. My options were limited to say the least, was doing about 40-44 mph and had foot on the brake now while judging my options :exclamation: this car was continuing to reverse making my lane about 6”6’ if that, I got to the point were I had to make a decision  :open_mouth:  .

1.Brake very had indeed and risk being shunted from behind :exclamation: .
2.Move over the white line so I could pass the vehicle while cars were in that lane.

I chose the latter and moved over the white line a bit, not so much that it would put the other drivers in danger but enough so I wouldn’t side swipe him. He promptly got a blast of the horn as I passed but they seemed obliviously to the potential danger they had put them self and others in. A multi vehicle pile up could very easily of been caused by their sheer stupidity :exclamation: :imp: . I could only assume it was their classic car that had broken down and they were reversing up to tow it  .

I was just pleased it was car’s in the other lane and not trucks as I don’t know what I would of done then.

I was fuming and was tempted to make a call to the police but I did a reality check and remembered certain comments on TNUK before on similar topics and thought what’s the point  .

1.They’d be gone before cops got there.
2.They couldn’t do anything as they didn’t witness anything.
3.Their doughnuts and coffee would have got cold.

If a traffic car had been passing at that time would they of stopped :exclamation:

Yet if anything had happened the professional driver would have got the blame.

Rant over

have, not of :stuck_out_tongue:

close call and well done for your level head…times like them you need to think and make important descsions hopefully we like to think at the time that we make the right one, but its allways afterwards that is when you are judged …one that bugs me is what descision do you make in lane 1 on a motorway and something happens unexpectantly in front of you. so as to make your chances of survival more appealling do

swerve to the left and roll down the embankment on the hard shoulder possibly jack knife but as you swerve to the left the trailer hits your passeger side

swerve to the right god forbid possibly missing another vehicle and a jack knife but the trailer hits your drivers side.

left or right the descision is yours

i fully support your campaign to sort out this common error, I’m sick to the back teeth of people saying would OF could OF should OF

it’s just not good enough and we have to make a stand.

You considered your options and chose what seems like your only safe course of action - you cannot do better than that

  • well, you can do better as you did have one other option, stay in bed and not drive…
    … I know - TAXI !!

Just out of curiousity, if there had been trucks in lane 2, what would you have done

I would of    and shouted “mummy”

On serious note had there been trucks in lane 2 i would probably of had no choice but to come to a near halt in lane 1 :exclamation: :open_mouth: , what would anybody else do

pecjam23:
what would anybody else do

Headed for the numpty who deliberately put themselves in that position and therefore was causing the incident to occur - whilst try to lessen the impact as much as possible.
