My newbie success diary!

first of all, thanks to everyone that gave me guidance about starting my first day as i was a bag of nerves, but you lot calmed me down.

anyways, passed me cat c in february, didnt bother applying for anything till recently when my digi tacho finally arrived. I signed up with a couple of agencies, was offered one days driving.

Day one : turns up at depot, all hectic loads of huge boxed wagons flying all over the shop, meet the man i need to report to, quick copy of my licence and cards, wagons loaded, theres the keys, see ya… oh wait one second the transport managers going with you.

■■■■ ! this bloke sees his good experienced drivers everyday, got a gut feeling of crunching gears, stalling every junction, hitting things…jesus was i wrong, after the initial ■■■■■■■ moment of…“here mate wheres the gear stick ?” to be told its an automatic, i was strangley very comfortable driving it, its just a bigger van !!
first three drops were a nightmare to get into, nevermind the reverse out on the way out ( wasnt really fazed), he actually commented that i did terrific and he wouldnt like to try them. few more drops, sorted the picking out myself. really good first day, now the dilemma, there were 7 drops left over that needed to be done the next day, so a quick, “well i can do that if you want me back the morra” worked a treat.

hence Day two : turns up, wagons loaded with the last of these drops, to be asked "reckon you can do it your self the day… “oh yeah” ! One drop refused due to a knob end who wouldnt open the gates for me because it should be there between 7-9 and it was 4th on me list so hey-ho, finishes me drops off, no problem, back to yard…ready to go home thinking that was it… then hungry bollocxs here notices theres a small van with three deliveries to do, and get the choice if i wanted more hours so i say yes.

Anyways ( sorry for gassing on), gets back, was handed an application form, "bring that in monday mate, fancy a permanent job, the transport manager who i was with day one, reckons i drive like i have drove them for years and funnily for me there is a vacancy arising next monday with my name on it.

THE END OF RANT haha, big foot in the door, good pay EXPERIENCE !

and a huge thank you for all your help through millions of threads i have spied on for info !

so to be honest, all these people that are tempting people into NOT doing there class 1 or two because you cant get work, i am a little bit proof that there is work out there !

Great stuff, congrats on the job. Hope all goes well next week - keep a diary of how your first few weeks go won’t you?

certainly mate, will do

congrats mate  . PMSL reading the bit about the gear stick nice one

jackg, what threw me was there was a cover where the gear stick should be, and the ■■■■■■ that i am thought that it may pop up or something with the ignition haha ! yes i am special (only ever drove manual contraptions )

Good on you nice to here it

Well done. Always good to hear of people getting a start. And the stories are becoming a lot more common so it must be getting better after a lousy few years.

Stay safe, Pete

Well done and Congrats on the job.

Just a small courier I have known a long time like I said thing went a bit pear shaped for him when 1 of his staff left him in the deep but I have picked up some driving work

here mate, where’s the gear stick?

brilliant  congratulations on your start, enjoy it.

Well done gasgash at getting the start.

It is not all doom and gloom then, and in the past I may have even said to people, “save your money mate”, or “do your test and chuck your licence in a drawer for two years”.

Normally I would only say that when somebody comes on and says I am 48 years old and worked in an office all my life and want to drive petrol tankers. What licence do I need? I have been told I can earn 50k :stuck_out_tongue:

cheers everyone for the wishes and i will keep yous all updated
