My kind of strip out!

i had forgotten all about these pics until i was going through my albums.

when i worked for cammacks, and it went quiet, i was put onto norfolk line work, well euroute to be precise. well one friday i was given cambridge and east dereham, great i thought early finish!! well i got the trailer and paperwork, and saw it was machinery. ■■■■, i thought strip out by the looks of it, anyway off to cambridge the night before, woke up to snow, this is getting worse i thought. anyway, the gates opened and into the yard i drove. morning driver, want a cup of tea? hell yeah!! is this a strip out job then? oh yeah, but we will do it all, you just relax we have done a few now, oh, best to move any aerials off you cab, err ok (i was a little confused by that).
well the crane truned up, set up , and they proceeded to attach the tilt to the crane, and lift it right up over the cab!! quick as a flash 2 of them were in the back moving boards, they wouldnt let me do anything except photo it all. once their stuff was off, they put it back together and then made me another brew!!!

once it was done and tea drank off i headed to dereham. i got there and was asked to get the side undone at the front and drive into their unloading bay. back we went and a big old forklift proceeded to try and get the machine (i cant remember what it was that came off there)off. it was a struggle as it was tight, but with a big clang and a lot of shaking, it came out. i couldnt see any damage to the trailer or the machine, so i have no idea what got caught on where. once that was done it was off to saxmundham (about 4 miles from where i lived, but over an hour from the yard), trailer change and down to harwich to drop the trailer ( i think i got roped into a shunt and got home rather late in the end, but thats another story!!)

unloading at dereham…

Surely it would have been a lot easier to put that lot on a flat or a stepframe?

Stripping a tilt is not the most pleasant job in the world, especially when it’s snowing!

But if somebody is doing it for you, then I don’t suppose it matters

Looks like that trailer came in from Sweden and it would be much easier to get a backload on a tilt than it would a flat.

Much easier than doing it yourself mat although I’m not sure how impressed your gaffer would have been to see the sheet dumped on his paintwork… :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

In circumstances like that we tended to drop the trailer…
then at least you could sit in your “cosy” cab whilst they did the graft for you…

You know its been a long day when you see pictures like the one third from the bottom and think “■■■■ look at that wagon its drove into a lake”

I wouldnt be very impressed with having that tilt dragged all over the cab either

Glad I wasn’t the only one that thought that at first

Agree about not wanting the tilt dragging over the paintwork either

i was a bit suprised at them doing it to be honest, it never twigged about them asking me about aerials!!! ah well, it was put down very gently, and they just lifted it, so it didnt become abrasive at all, and you couldnt tell thats how they did it

yes it had. i know norfolk line/euroute did have a few flats but i only did one and that was straight back empty, guess there isnt a huge amout of reloads for them, or they cant be bothered to look for them

I used to have a regular run with 3 big aluminium lumps from S. Wales to Neuf
Brisach in Eastern France and they wanted us to strip out to unload. With a
difficult battered old tilt it was a helluva job so when we noticed they had a
giant forklift on site we told them the tilt didn’t work. Much easier after
that  .

  got to be done!!

Agree with dad, the action or working shots are the best.
