My first two (fulltime) days

I’ve been doing part-time work for a local company for a few months now, but I started full-time with them yesterday. I’ve got my lorry, nicknamed ‘Bob’ by the kids (it’s the same one I’ve been driving before, but I don’t have to share it now  ). It’s a 2003 reg TGA 26.410, but has been cleaned & scrubbed inside to within an inch of it’s life!

Started yesterday at 5AM, popping down to Harwich to collect a Blue Water trailer, then off to Long Crendon to offload. Got stuck on the A12 at Brentwood for an hour or so due to an accident, which then put me smack in the rush hour for the M25, so got to the drop nearly 2 hours late (had to take a 45 on the way due to the delays). No great dramas though, the client wasn’t bothered, and made me a coffee whilst we unloaded. Then back to Harwich to drop the trailer and collect the next one ready for today. Back in the yard and finished at 1600, ready for an early night and an early start today…

0430 today, and off to the first drop at Wincanton Daventry for an 0800 appointment. I was told to make sure I didn’t miss the appointment, so made sure I got there at 0730. When I checked in at the gatehouse, they sent me straight onto bay 17. By the time I’d sorted the paperwork and taken it to the office along with my keys, they were already unloading. Within 30 minutes, the 20 pallets were off, and I was on my way to Wellingborough, to DHL / Homebase DC. Again, straight in, straight on, and by the time I’d put the susi lock on the red line and dropped the keys in, they’d taken their 2 pallets, and were telling me I could go. By now it was 10AM and the next drop, 10 miles away, was booked in for 1230. Could my luck hold?

So off to John Lewis DC at Northampton. I tried my luck, and asked politely if they could possibly get me in early. ‘No problems, jump on bay 2 and we’ll sort you out’. This was to be my only reversing aggro of the day - a dead straight reverse in from teh entrance gate - could I get it straight, could I ■■■■■■■■! Eventually on, and the remaing pallets off within 15 minutes, stayed there for another 15 though to get a break in, then back to Harwich.

Bobtailed back from Harwich to Earls Colne, to collect a trailer from one of our customers, then off to Sudbury to load it ready for a drop in Harlesden in the morning. Left Sudbury with 1h20m of drive time remaining, and made my way back via Colchester. What a mistake! If you know the area, you’ll know what North Station / Avenue of Remembrance is like at rush hour. As I was coming off the roundabout onto the Avenue of Remembrance, looking like a nodding dog, trying to look in every direction at once, I caught a quick glimpse of a light down my LH side - a car trying to squeeze down the side rather than waiting for me to get clear. After hitting the brakes, and a quick remonstration, we carried on, finally getting back to the yard with 5 minutes of drive time left, and a lay-in tomorrow morning, until 0530! Got told tonight that I’d be losing Bob for a week though, as one of the other guys is on holiday, and they need to get a casual in to cover the work - because the other guy’s lorry is a brand new one, and they’re not happy to let one of the casuals in a shiny new one, they want me to drive it instead. A compliment, but I just hope Bob gets looked after properly!

All in all, a good start, starting to feel like a real lorry driver now (dunno where I’m going to find one though!). I’ll try to remember to take a photo of the lorry and stick it on here - if you see me out and about please wave or say hello, always like to meet new people.

Well done.

Keep the diary coming, but pics are nicer.

Hmm, just had a bizarre conversation with my neighbour - he’s old-time friends with my boss (it was through him that I first got my shot).

He asked me how my first couple of days had been, told him what I’d been up to. He then asked when I was getting my new truck. I said tomorrow, but only for a week whilst Pete’s off, then back to Bob. He looked puzzled and said ‘Oh, maybe I shouldn’t have said anything - I sawTony on Saturday and he told me he’d ordered a new lorry for you - you’re getting a new Actros. Maybe just act surprised when you find out!’

Very grateful if that is the case, but I would have expected to get a hand-me-down, and one of the other drivers getting the new one, if anything. If not, I’m quite happy to stay with Bob for a while anyway whilst I get my mistakes and ■■■■-ups out of the way!

Did a run to K&N at Park Royal on Wednesday, taking a trailer full of aircraft waste receptacles down there, then reloaded at Potters Bar, and back to Earls Colne, where I swapped over to another ferry trailer and took it to Harwich. Finished the day by running to Maldon and picking up my trailer for Thursday and Friday.

Thursday, set off a bit later, and wandered off to Rochford with a load of wheelie bins for the depot behind the fire station. Offloaded very quickly, and then up to Felixstowe for a reload of 2 pallets of carpet and back to Maldon, stopping at their second depot to collect some gym equipment, and take it all back to Euro-PSL. Offloaded it here, then took a slow run over to Chelmsford, to reload with a full trailer and 27 tons of magazines. Back to PSL, unloaded, and then home.

Friday, off to Braintree to load with a load of tat for Lidl, and then down to the fun and games of Enfield RDC. Surprisingly, allocated a bay straight off, unfortunately it was tight between two others, and a blindside - the other lorries parked alongside the verge in the yard don’t help much either, but as there is bugger all parking around the site, what do you do?

Took a lot of shunting to get in, but fortunately only about 10 minutes in total. Obviously not quickly enough for the Spanish ■■■■ who felt the need to lean on his air horns all the time, then come steaming through at 90mph as soon as the gap appeared. Offloaded in double quick time, then for the interminable wait for the paperwork. Pulled the truck off the bay and parked outside whilst I waited, as there was a Stobart trying to get in alongside me, and he wasn’t getting any help from anybody - sorry for letting the forum down by being helpful to a Stobart, but he was a nice guy, and had a good chat to him whilst we were waiting.

Couple of reloads and then back to Maldon, to trans-ship to the outgoing continentals, and then home.

Saturday morning, ran back to PSL to load the trailer with gym kit ready for Monday’s trip to Nottingham - was promised faithfully that if I get there for 8, they’d have me loaded and on my way by 830 - in the end we left there at 10! What’s that they say about promises in transport?

Got back to the yard, and was told that I was getting a new lorry - a Mercedes Actros - if I want it. If not, I can stay with Bob, but I’ve got first choice. Apparently its coming into Orwell Trucks on Monday for it’s PDI, then signwriting etc. Decisions, decisions, decisions. All in all, a good week, and not regretting the change yet.

Some pictures from today, when I finally remembered the camera. First one of my youngest who came with me today to get loaded:

Saw you on Friday about 4pm climbing the hill into Danbury. But I’ll excuse you not seeing me as I was in my car heading for home :sunglasses:

Seems a bit odd falling into a new motor but not a bad way to start.

I always keep a look out for your lorry, as it’s the only one I’m likely to recognise, but I’ll give up on the car!

Yep, the new lorry does seem odd, especially to be given the first choice over it. Just worried that I might alienate myself with all the others by having it - some of the others are in 56 plate ones, so they might get the arse. The only downside I can see with the lorry is that it will be an auto box, and I much prefer the manual in my usual motor. Anybody know what the new Actros boxes are like - are they as slow to react as the MAN ones?

I’ll post up some pics of the new one when I get it - I’ll be in the white one above on Monday, then back to Bob for the duration - it’s a blue MAN with the low roof cab, but still with BT Cullum over it and my plate in the windscreen, so give me a wave if you see it.

Gary

Well done on the pics.

Makes it a lot better, and the story is good as well.
