My employer won't play ball

I would say though keep your wits about you ,a few months ago I got a phone call in my truck from a depot manager ,apparently I’d expressed a intrest in working for him  ,anyway at the time we had no work so I assumed it was something on a temporary basis ,he then proceeded to go through every detail of the job even saying I could have a couple of nights out at livingstone to lessen the pain of a 140 mile daily commute ,at the end I said this is only temporary  ,and thanks for filling me in but I’d never mentioned this depot due to it being 70 miles from my home ,no no it’s fulltime :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :unamused: :unamused: .i thanked him but said NO .
It transpired that at some meeting my boss had thought it would be a good idea to put my name down to work there and had rung this chap saying I’d expressed a intrest even though various people at meeting had said he’s never going to commute 70 miles there a day :exclamation: :exclamation: on a regular basis
Then the women from ports rang ,apparently I’d put my name down to do that ,no I just wanted to know t&c,s on port work .

I’ve worked on a contract for 2 different main contractors for 12 years, the first for 5 years and the second which is one of the largest logistics ([emoji57]) firms in the UK ever since. Due to a multitude of reasons I have become very disillusioned with the job and feel it’s time for a change. The only reason I haven’t left before now is because I am still on the original T’s&C’s and I’m on a pretty good screw compared to all the others but I simply can’t take it any longer.
So, last week I rang the somebody who runs the container part of the business and asked about a transfer, I know I’ll lose my decent contract but at least my service record would continue along with the company pension scheme. She said yes there would be a job for me but I would have to get my line manager to start the process of a transfer so I bit the bullet and asked him today. He said because he didn’t want to lose me and because our contract is listed within the group as critically short of drivers he and his boss would have to say no to me!
My question is can they do this or do I have the right to demand a transfer?

Simple answer is NO you can not demand a transfer, all you can do is request a transfer.
If the vacancy is advertised internally then you can apply just the same as others within the Company, but its more than likely if your Manager does not want to lose you for what ever reason, its a fair chance somebody will be more suitable,or your application will have been mislaid.

if they are struggling for drivers, why not have an informal or even formal chat about what it is that is making the job so bad?

I had an interview for Maritime and have not got the job. There were queues of drivers trying to get on for them. I have a rhides card and experience in container work sliding trailers etc. yet I did not make the grade so I would not push it if I were you as drivers are 10 a penny and they have the pick of the crop.

Genuine advice

Is that at leeds depot■■?
I was in there this week and saw what looked like a new recruit actually been shown how to use a sliding trailer.
Also still got the advert up asking for drivers in there gate window

But it’s not your employer not playing ball its your line manager .
Go see HR and go over his head

If you’re talking about the company with blue mercs, and now some white ones, I don’t reckon you’ll last on it anyway. Not the best by all accounts, pay or management wise

I did that yesterday but there’s not really a whole lot he can do about it as a lot of the problems are the company we’re contracted to. He shares the same frustrations.

My mates the same as me, never pulled a container in his life. He filled in the online application form, they rang him back 10 minutes later! He’s gone on the 4 on 4 off night shift at ikea in donny. So far he’s very impressed with them but those shifts are no good to me, I want Monday to Friday tramping or preferably semi tramping which they don’t seem to have any vacancies at the moment.

I reckon the guy who interviewed me remembered me from Roadways 2 years ago. They wanted me to do Felixestowe every single night within 9 hours and I just could not do it. You can be an hour or so on the docks dropping containers and picking ones up. So every shift I was driving for 9.2 to 9.6 hours. Anyway I have not got it so that’s that.

dozy:
Try going through h.r ,we had this years ago where drivers were blocked transferring to depots nearer where they live ,they went to hr and they sorted it out so they were allowed to transfer to other depots

maybe, it was cheaper to send you to a different depot and there insurance claims dropped when you left your depto huh  oh look dozy is leaving our depot for new one , quick TM give him a lift lol

Or, are they flash/brash new world managers who plague the industry nowadays and won`t listen ?

Nomi, don’t do it mate, you’re on an old contract which i have no doubt your colleagues would give their eye teeth for, so don’t for goodness sake transfer within the company to a new lower paid contract.

Sometimes you just get down about a job, or it might be something more personal that’s making you feel like this, whatever it is only leave or transfer when you can better yourself, don’t voluntarily go down the ladder.

I often have the same thoughts about driving a proper lorry again instead of this electronic underpowered tat, though they’re all going the same way in Europe so unless you go OD and buy your own you’ll just end up with another parcel spec euro6 strangled heap sooner or later, there are not enough swear words in all the worlds combined languages to describe my feelings about the arsetronic gearbox and its equivalents, and sometimes when it’s been a particularly hard drive and the gearbox from hell has ensured i’ve had to stop completely unecessarily at umpteen junctions where a manual that would have been under power in the right gear valuable seconds earlier and allowed safe smooth and more economical uninterrupted progress…i feel for the new drivers in that they’ve never experienced engines with real lugging power and proper gearboxes that allow the driver to make use of that torque and the pleasure that lorry driving once was if you took a pride in it, and they probably never will so won’t know what they’ve missed.

By choice i suppose lots of us would choose a different vehicle to the one we have (or maybe the same make with just a different engine/box combo), i’ll never get what i want whilst in my present job as every new vehicle is auto, but in truth the overall package is far too good to consider leaving, and i honestly believe you’ll regret losing your better T’s & C’s in no time once the novelty of the different works wears off.

Life is to short to do a job you don’t enjoy

I lasted 3 and a half days at Tesco thurrock

I can’t disagree with anything you’ve said but I need a change, I know I might regret it but hey ho job satisfaction is also important to me. To add to my dilemma we are half way through buying a new house but keeping our existing house to rent out so I really should be thankful for a stable job.
