good to see this thread has still got life in it yet, cos theres been plenty of good advice flyin about for any new start wannabe thinking about giving it a go. hard work is the only way to do it and of course a big slice of good luck.

this is the perfect example of how NOT to set up a business, one of my biggest pet hates is the term “LIVING THE DREAM” cos nothing could be farther from the truth in our industry. I could rant and rave about this “typical” often asked on here question all night but to no avail, so in a nutshell you are living in la la land if that’s your idea of running a transport business…lets see…as yet you have no licence, no cpc, no experience but you think working or someone for a short time will do it ■■?..and of course the daddy of all big mistakes!!! you want to borrow 40k before you even have any work lined up…once again LA LA LAND my friend, you are doomed before you even start to think about the basics. am tempted to have a real long rant about this but will refrain, as the post is totally crazy on every count

I agree this lifestyle is far from a dream. In fact it is bloody hard work as you are essentially doing two jobs (driving & managing) but only getting paid for one. On top of this we have the transport commissioner doing there best to make the job as difficult as possible for OD to earn an honest living. However with all of this I would not discourage anyone to come into this industry. We have an ageing workforce left behind from the baby bloomers and we are having to plug the gap with international drivers. Meanwhile the UK has the Highest unemployment rate of 18-24year olds in Europe While the haulage industry has a skills gap of around 40,000 drivers. For service levels this is terrible as well as rates being kept low due to cheap foreign haulage. The more British drivers we can get working the quicker we can start raising the standards, rates, and service levels. Now is the time for the government to intervene and start making HGV training more accessible to the ordinary man and start plugging the skills gap. What do you
