Does anyone know of any decent vlogs or FB pages from any drivers doing these tours where they fully explain in detail the working life on these tours? Not just a snippet here and there showing the glamour of it but an actual typical week or month from day to day, hour by hour.
I’ve made a few enquiries with some companies regarding vacancies and on the base of it , it appears pay isn’t that good, I’m doing tramping now, 60 hours and never weekends and I’d be losing £200 a month if I went on the music tours.
Also does anyone know the pay of PT Williams who do a lot of European events work? I don’t want to waste my time sending a CV if the pay is not too good
Try this guy , some excellent stuff.
Have you factored in they get paid 7 days a week because you won’t be going home often on tour work.
Never had of P T Williams before. 4 trucks and 6 trailers on the O licence?
Euro tours more difficult now for UK based companies because of 90 day rule. Some flagged-out to Eire.
Based in Wrexham with a depot in Keighley. They do a lot of van work into Europe, got a good FB page showing where the drivers are such as the Spanish islands, Greece and Tunisia. Wasn’t aware they only had a small amount of Artics
Thanks I’ll take a look
I wasn’t aware they got paid for days off too if they’re out on tour.
I think the double manning would put me off too and having to leave “my unit” with another driver while I flew back home before flying back out to takeover the baton, as appears to happen
Every company is different, I don’t do tour work but I get nights out and overtime to be parked up at weekends and get a hotel. So I effectively get paid 7 days a week. The other reason to do this kind of stuff is for the money plus essentially the tourist/holiday aspect.
i know nothing about the subject heading so havent commented. However i was at a gig on saturday and the company doing that was fly by nite. I know they have other contracts so if it doesnt work out doing the music you may be able to transfer to another contract with less hassle than finding a completely new job.
To be honest, I’m really happy in my job tramping 4 nights and home at weekends and only 10 mins drive to the yard. The more I think about events work the more I feel it wouldn’t be for me
If you want/need weekends free the majority of the year it might not be for you, if it’s purely max money for limited hours at work you will hate it.
There are other niches that will take you abroad if that is what you are after, some companies run 5 day channel hoping jobs doing two runs to France/Belgium/Holland a week. Air freight and fridge can be weird 24hr day start time, not much point seeing Europe at 1am in my book but suits some people.
I did channel hopping 5 years ago, France, Belgium and Luxembourg but would like to go further afield. Weekend working and been away for a few weeks isn’t a problem but I doubt I’d find the job which suits me. Fridges are a no go, I’m currently parked on an ind est in Swansea and can hear the faint humming of a fridge in the distance and it’s doing my nut in🤣
Take a look at “Truckeroak” on TikTok - Make Your Day
She drives for Stagetruck
You have just answered your own post
Want to be off weekends, yes
Drop 50 quid a week, no
Short commute, yes
Different units, no
Double man, no
I said I would work weekends but yes the other points clearly show that tour work wouldn’t suit me.
Maybe general haulage around the Europe is what would suit me better but finding a company in Yorkshire or the neighbouring counties which does that would appear to be nigh on impossible
Neill & Brown still go abroad, seen them on the hook to killingholme boats.
Used to be most counties in England had some haulage firm doing transnational stuff, now only a few do it?
For the music trucking, don’t they expect you to be a roadie and start setting up the equipment as well? LOL.
Only if they have a time machine to take you back to the 90’s, I think.
That did go on once upon a time, but now? Not in it myself but O know a couple of drivers that have done a bit. Now it seems to be relays of drivers, and drivers taking correct breaks etc at the gigs, with no back stage access.
Brexit with the 90 day, and cabotage rules, have made it more difficult for UK companies to do long tours. Look at current Fly By Nite trucks…Eire reg.
Edit to add
Edwin Shirley now have Eire and Netherlands reg trucks too.
Back in the 90’s on the tour, the driver could earn a bit of extra by “Clicking” , a small handheld device to count how many go in the venue.
To help set up the lighting, rigging and loud speakers.
The formula 1 racing teams would have a hospitality trailer that could be converted as a catering venue and additional marquees taken along too, I did hear drivers having to clean all the areas, go to the supermarket to buy food, then prepare it to make meals for all the staff, wash it up afterwards, and no opportunity to see any racing.
