Yesterday morning Ken Bruce played Bette Midler singing The Rose. This particular song from the film, which is supposedly loosely based on the rather sad life of Janis Joplin ( ‘Me and Bobby Mcgee’ and the version of ‘Piece of My Heart’ used in the Miss Dior TV advert) just really gets to me every time I hear it. From what was said in the programme after it was played it seems others were too; from talking to others it seems that you get more emotionally affected by things as you get older. Lots of other tunes I find have a similar effect, notably some of the popular opera arias.
Just in case anyone is interested and never heard of her, this below is Janis Joplin giving it everything:
yes I have loads of songs that bring back various happy / sad times - james sit down is one as it was the song in the charts when I joined up and played at every naffi do. iron maiden holy smoke another as again this helped on my Walkman keep me awake whilst bulling shoes etc.
so many more from birth of my little ones to funerals.
If this doesn’t reduce you big hairy arsed (we’re softies really) truckies to tears, you’re already dead.
If you’ve already lost your parents and miss them every day, have a few tissues ready.

A solo player doing “The Last Post” at the war memorial . Remember lost Mates every time , and it turns me into a tearey eyed blubberer.
I agree about the last post, fantastic tribute, not a military man myself but it does remind me of the ones who never made it back to these shores alive
‘If I Had Words’,an oldie from the seventies I believe,I only recently discovered that it was based on a well known classical piece.
It was used in the film Babe youtube.com/watch?v=pExCByqi0NU
