As far as I am aware, apart from individual artists offering free music there is no legal way to download music for free, there are plenty of sites where you can download for a small fee though, like itunes, Amazon and many record label sites,
another program you can use, but only to listen to music is SPOTIFY, it is just a program that lets you listen to tracks/artists/albums that you search for, all for free, but there is no way to download the music from the program, it is paid for through advertising, you can avoid the ads by paying a subscription, but is expensive then.
I used to use Bearshare, this was a good few years back when it wasn’t full of pop-ups. I never had problems with getting viruses etc either.
As Jimti says, Amazon are cheap and I have used them a few times. And it’s legal so you haven’t got to worry about getting a knock at the door from Simon Cowell asking for his royalties!
Just pay, but not the artists get in on a scene download site where bandwidth is as fast as you can download and everything guarentee’d virus free & working. However they are alternitives but again a miminal charge ($10-20 a month) for all you can download.

This is a P2P site, and an easy way to get viruses no matter what their promises, and of course you would have to break the terms and conditions if you downloaded copy write material, so it would be illegal
