Mudguard damage.

Tarmaceater:
With reference to foreign vehicles and their top mudguards missing, it may be removed as some have clips to take the top bit off as they get blow outs in the summer so with the top part missing it may let the heat dissipate.

What planet are you on !!

lizard:
Being skidless causes damage to the tops of the mud guards.
Having skids will stop this happening.

You don’t need skids /run up ramps with air suspension.

I’ve been a driver for 40 years, I’ve read and heard some absolute bollox in those years but this ■■■■■ from Tarmaceater is the biggest load of it I’ve ever read!

He obviously has issues……… and I’m trying to be diplomatic!

As you are on about shunters who can name where those nasty ■■■■■■ in green overalls worked.

Go back to page 1 where you’re having a laugh has posted the Euro lads have the top of their mud guards missing, the European firms do remove the top part to prevent tyre blow outs .
There are removable mud guard tops with a pull clip .The Portuguese and Spanish were doing this 30 years ago .

The sole reason for the removable mudguard tops or roller blinds of the 70’s & 80’s is to fit snow chains, nothing to do with height limits or heat dissipation. Unfortunately archaic construction and use regulations prevent us removing them and unless you keep them on the top bunk there is nowhere to store the covers.

This is developing into an interesting thread regarding myths, folklore and grease.

Modern trailers are designed to flex/bend, some have a pronounced banana shape when loaded & uncoupled, many customers will place a trestle in front of the supporting legs.

I was a reasonably proficient tanker driver from a young age and one bugbear is a driver who lathers grease / product all over a trailer. This includes ladders and manlids, but especially the fifth wheel mechanism. Gloves are for fuelling up or taking samples. Climbing up a ladder or pulling the pin should be done with bare hands or a clean rag. GGranville, fffetch your cloth!

We have had air suspension for over 30 years, nobody should be at a loss as to how to keep grease on the fifth wheel plate, certainly not pushing it over the edge like an avalanche.

I have worked for several Continental companies who had their own ideas how to drop a trailer, Ze Germans told us to lower the trailer suspension and chock the wheels, raise the unit suspension and then lower the legs. The Dutch lowered the unit and trailer suspension before loading or unloading unless on a bay where the trailer angle can be adjusted for a pallet trolley. The French didn’t seem to have a standard method but most trailers had holes worn in the mudguards.

“Take your greasy gloves off!”

Photo today. 10cm between tyre and trailer.
No space at all for a mudguard top without it getting damaged as trailer moves.
Euro6 Merc with newish euroliner trailer.
You want max cube on trailer, without going over 4.0m height limits.

To concur then : Due to construction and use , mudguard alterations or alternatives were not allowed in the UK but as posted in the 70’s and 80’s UK trucks did modify their mudguards for setting up snow chains .
But the European drivers have always and still have removable mudguards or from the manufacturer of the vehicle, the top half is not fitted as standard especially for hotter countries like Turkey or Greece .
Next time a Turkish haulier overtakes or at the MSA parking, have a look , and you will see what I’m harping on about.

Explain Greek Ski resorts then. Hot Countries still get cold in winter, Italy, Greece, Turkey has a couple of mountains too.

UK Construction and Use regulations stipulate full mudguards, with spray suppression. There are a few exemptions like 4x4, dual purpose vehicles, timber hauliers, side tipping tippers and concrete mixers.

In the summer remove the top part and in the winter put the top part back in , if it’s removable for European units .

Just to add to this drivel, Volvo have a steel frame attachable to the rear cab wall specifically for attaching the mud guard tops, very common on German reg tractors but not unique to them. Cant think of another that offer this but it’s a good idea. As said above it’s for snow chain fitment nothing to do with Toby’s theory about heat dissipation, he must have picked that up at the Maire de Limoges annual bash and translated it wrong!

I like Toby’s posts. He’s clued up on and has experience on a wide range of topics (unlike Carry[zb]all) and has a dry sense of humour. Sometimes you can never tell whether he’s being serious or taking the ■■■■, which is all part of the fun. He may be mistaken on the heat dissipation theory, but it made for a good story nonetheless  .

I agree. Toby may very well march to a different drummer to the rest of us but he’s harmless and invariably means well.

Yes yes no offense meant to Toby, fully enjoy his posts, esp about dinner with the mayor and the two alsations that lived just north of Le Mans, both of whom I have met so he’s not ■■■■■■■■■■■■. Have probably met Toby himself years ago on Caen or Cherbourg ships but who knows?

Another urban myth springs from this thread, ADR tankers do not need to use snow chains, it’s not as simple as that.

Tankers used to have fully enclosed steel mudguards which made it quite difficult or impossible to fit chains. It was never about snow chains causing sparks. [emoji14]

Modifications to ADR allowed rubber mudguards and removable tops. I always stuck to my own rule that if I needed chains I would park up. We did carry them or at least had access to them for showing to authority figures.
