Mr mikey-t the saga continues - now on tour

Yes your right I do wake up and go to catering, 3 times a day lol but only when the work is done.
I have just come off a 45 hour break and am now off the rod Stewart tour and doing general event work until my next gig which could be anything at this time of year.

I am sat at lymm at the moment, just wired up my fancy new mifi device to my iPad and catching up on the day which was a ■■■■ up to be honest, bit of a long one but here we go

My 45 hour break was up at 11 pm and I hadn’t heard anything so got some sleep the night before and went shopping, eventually got the call to move out after moving a trailer back into the car park, and I had to get from Norwich to Nottingham to get a fresh trailer and load out of Melton Mowbray for 9am simples.

Unfortunately another driver phoned me an hour after bed so I was up, then production arrived and started having there party next door so 3 hours sleep for me.
I go to move the trailer from out the front of the stadium were there is a complete closed road systems, and out of the entire mile or so of free road , 4 contractors had parked in front and alongside the trailer,
Oh well that ain’t moving, on my way I go,

I get stuck behind captain sensible all the way and it’s single track most of it so I lost god knows how many hours and eventually got back to base and due a break so I get a shower in to find out I didn’t put it on break so I have to wait around for another 45 , not happy now.

Anyway on my way to Melton my sat nav breaks I have lost all visuals. And my map is not the sort you can glance at whilst driving so I’m running on instinct and 3 road closures see to it that I am running incredibly late now. Even so I arrive at 9:30 am to be told, " oh we weren’t expecting you til 12"
There goes more time, fair play to the guys they worked there nuts off to get me out and straight back into diversions and road closures.

I am meant to be taking this load to Edinburgh but am getting hopelessly lost trying to find the a1 around all the closures so I make the decision to hit the 69 and m6 and go the way I know by heart.
On the way I stop off to buy " a cheap" sat nav with what little money I have, the cheapest is 80 quid. And for a car. It gets better as smiths have only huge great ■■■■■■ atlas maps. No good to me, anyway off we go again, might swell stick to the m6 now. Unfortunately I could only get as far as lymm before both driving time and WTD run out . This has messed me up for 2 days now as I could of got most of the way there without the problems and be free to stay or ship out of edinburgh.
Instead I am going to have to boot myself out of bed early and burn most of my days driving getting to Edinburgh. Were I hope they have a team to unload and don’t keep me waiting otherwise that will be a full day 2 wasted.

I can justify the decision to hit m6 to myself. But I’m not sure the bosses would see it that way. It’s just I’m still new to this and when you loose your failsafe such as a sat nav and decent map and the cards are all stacking up against you , what do you do, in retrospect I should have phoned another driver, but even that is not easy when each side of your truck is foot printing soft verges.

All in a days work though I suppose.

As for pics of my truck I’m in a rental at the moment due to the excessive work that comes with summer. But I am in a White daf usually pulling a flat bed loaded with steels or a big KB branded box trailer. And not a big nice expensive new one either for obvious reason.

I will try get some pics up though

I doubt there is a trucker alive who never made a bad decision that loses time and messes you up for days I still make em but lucky enough so far for them to keep covered up  sounds like a decent enough job, you seem happy so it’s happy days. Doesn’t it ■■■■ you off having 45 off in uk though? Or are you taking 45 somewhere you can have a wander?

Mikey,i saw Rod in concert a few years ago,he came on stage to say he went to the coach park to see where all the fans had come from, and thanked them for making long journeys to see him,Rod a bus spotter.

You could have done a print out at the time you had a break and made a note on it that you selected the wrong mode, you didn’t have to take another 45. Just don’t make a habit of it. As for the satnav failure, ever heard of maps? £ 80 would have bought you three top notch maps and given you £50+ in change! And they don’t break down…it’s a steep learning curve!

Yes as I said I have a map, I have a navigator, unfortunatelly you can’t read a navigator when your 2 miles down a single track road and driving, and stop starting wasn’t an option as there was verge works meaning every lay-by was ■■■■■■ hence the going the route I know.

As for rod yeah, he is a true gent, we was watching him sound check in the empty seating and he kicked us a football out to play with. Lost it over a fence the other day

When you get lost you pull over at the first available stopping place and sort yourself out. We’ve all got lost at one time or another. When you spoke of a tour I didn’t realise you meant a mystery tour! Are you DAF95 in disguise?

I’ve never been lost. Occasionally, i’ve temporarily not known where I am

i had a drop in birmingham and a drop in doncaster once, did the birmingham straight up to doncaster after. Had all my breaks and worked out roughly how long it will take to get back to base. Nearing the end of my journey, was getting on the m25 from the m40, we were based in toworth, gets a call from my very calm boss thanking me for great service, also asking if i wouldnt mind turning round and heading back to birmingham to pick the pallets up and swap them wth the doncaster ones. i only did it the wrong way round, and the goods in idiots didnt even check wot they were signing for, anyway, lesson learned there, i checked everything twice all the time after that…

Yeah I can’t afford to make BIG mistakes. There very lenient on the small ones the odd wrong route and hour errors but if I ■■■■ up and am late for a gig that’s potentially a cancelled concert / gig / event and a lot of unhappy people.
I am parked up Somewere on the m25 run at the moment ready to make my way to cantebury. Apparently I have all the gear for the cantebury university ball. I may stay awake for this one!

Here’s a strange one I can’t explain though. Sat in the services and 2 ET plated trucks came in to do a trailer swap. One guy obviously didn’t know what he was doing as it took him 10 minutes to figure out his leg winder. But here’s the strange bit both drivers removed all the bulbs from the trailers and swapped them onto the other respective trailers. Do they have there own or are they a diffrent type abroad? I can’t think of a rational reason for it!

Oh and I had my first fun reverse in this job. Sts audio hire in Manchester lovelly place but obviously designed for transits. ■■■■■■■ of a angle and reverse with a clear road. Even worse with parked cars and suicidal dhl drivers.
Would you believe I was reversing in and a delivery driver sped round me and parked directly behind my trailer! As I’m reversing.
Cheeky ■■■■■■! Anyway I carried on because I’m not having that. I will reverse in first and I might allow enough room for him to drive in also cos I’m nice like that. Anyway he gets all arsey “■■■■■■■ kids in wagons thinking they own the road”

I stopped him jn his tracks mid sentence! " look mate I’m 44 tonne a lot bigger a lot more powerfull and your ■■■■ hued piece of tin foil with an engine won’t even scratch my trailer bump stop. I’m going to carry on reversing now. Choice is yours"

He pulled his wheeled trolley out and worked the 10ft walk I had left him. I have no patience for people like this we are all in the same game and a bit of curticy (sp) goes a long long way

I’ve heard they swap bulbs cause when they pick up a trailer that a driver has left there’s no bulbs in them as the drivers carry their own but don’t know if it’s true.
Good on you for sticking to your guns with the van drivers they can be right pricks at times(so can lorry drivers) I’d of laughed me head off if I’d seen it

All you can do is laugh or cry!
I am at cantebury university ball at the moment. What a ■■■■ up this job is too. Only route in is full of sharp corners that a transit would struggle with and one way roads. My method? Well simple give 2 sound engineers spare high via jackets and stick em on the road whilst I drive the wrong way down it at 10am! Perfect in theory accept the guys had no balls so cars were just flying past them and round me amazingly when I’m doing some creative reversing too! The world is full of egits.

It was only after I unloaded that they told me there was nowere to park something my size! Great nevermind drive there’s a coach park down the road,
1 hour later after a 16 point turn I am coming out of said “coach park” to find Somewere big enough not full of French and Danish coaches with passengers that like to stand behind you.

Eventually I Ended up all the way back out on the a2 to try and get 11 hours in before the reload! As you can imagine I did not sleep well

Ay up mate was you in keele services this morning? Had one of your lads next to me and two in front when I woke up. I was in a yellow lockwoods motor on the back row of parking bays.

Wasn’t me I’m inbarnsley about to head to Liverpool then London, can’t think who it Was or were they have been.
I was due to go home today but that changed quickly I’m now on a Barnsley-Liverpool- Brit row- and then maybe home. So might be back Tuesday ish

Well I am home for a short while, I thought it would feel good but I hate it. I can’t sleep in a bed, can’t stomach a big cooked meal and my friends are ‘different’ I just want to go back now.
I think the job has got me now and I genuinely don’t like it as I have a serious girlfriend that I can’t read. I know she is ok with me working away and loves the money but things are very diffrent for me and ita as if nothing has changed for her.
Any newbies getting into long haul and tramping be sure you can handle it and the family can. They will lie to you to keep you happy.

Anyway I can remember much of what I have done as it’s been all go all I can tell you is I have run the length and breadth of the country and now have a few days off to get my passport sorted.
I have done at least 5 runs in central and greate London and trust me that’s an experience. No one can ever describe everything that happens there my aim from now on though is in and out as quickly as ■■■■■■■ possible.

When I go back on Saturday I am being sent out in the little tonka toy rigid to do a few more londons to find all the suppliers we normally use and to get more city experience and then I am off abroad by the looks of it.

So yeah in summary I hate London. Most of our work is based there I hate being home now and people around me seem to have changed wereas I know the truth is I have changed. An it’s looking like this is less of a temporary job and more chlorine adhoc kind of deal I am now being described as one of the boys.

God help me and god help the rest of them

Fair play and good luck, some guys love the job and become addicted you look like one of them
But stop moaning about your mrs go and get your rocks off for a few days non stop and look forward to going back to work
And you’ve survived London, that is seriously an achievement! I hate it there to but we all have to have a go.

Really should do and hate to boast but I have a gorgeous 20 year old girlfriend and that keeps me going,
Any who work wise this week I am in a 18 tonne tonk a toy rigid, main reason for this in my boss words are to *get you into some deep city ■■■■ and see how you get on *
At the moment I am in the total opposite I am sat at the Eden project with a load of light rigs etc watching television and drinking beer, life can be good

Fixed that for ya!

Normally that would worry me, but I won the lottery with this one, too honest for her own good, she couldn’t even keep my birthday present a secret,

Plus she has got the image in her head that a few months of this means a new flat/house for the both of us.

Not taking my chances and going full on 3 months out though, everyone has needs
