Moving over

While I was cracking on up the M6 last night I was following on behind a double decker and could see further up the road an artic on the hard shoulder, hazards on etc with the tyre fitter in attendance. At this point I moved out into lane 2 and flashed the decker to let them out and they just carried on in lane 1 right past said hazard and about 100m further up the road proceded to drift right onto the hs. At this point I thought “that was zb lucky” but it got me thinking. I always if possible will move over for hazards on the hs whether it be tyre fitters, recovery or just a broken down car but the amount of drivers that don’t is quite high. I’m a night trunker so I appreciate the roads are a bit quieter and more space is available to move over than for dayshift drivers but obviously visibility is better during the day too so you can see if some zb is in a dangerous position or not. Just wondered what everybody else’s thoughts were? I’ve only been driving for 8 months so am I just being over cautious?

If possible I’ll move over and hog both lanes which stops the idiot in his sports car undertaking me which has actually happened but if it’s not possible I’ll just drift to the right hand side of the inside lane.

Yeh, always move over.
There has been a lot of deaths over the years in parked broken down vehicles.
I’ve had a couple of close ones myself with cars, when you had to change your own wheels , ■■■■ ed if I’d do it now.
In those days most truck drivers did move over, to be fair.

I always move over, and I must thank the driver last week who was overtaking me for moving into lane 3 to let me move over. Taking into account it’s easier to do at night.

i always move over when i can for the aforementioned hazards.

i also move over when going past laybys with wagons overnighting in them as on the rare occasion i have to stop in a layby i wake up when the truck is rocked by a passing vehicle.

i just see it as ettiquette

I always try to move over if I can, if not I knock the cruise off and sit as far over to the right of the lane as I can.

Same as above I’ll move over a bit if the roads are empty when passing a layby.

I don’t move over for caravans, ever.

Annoying as it might seem to others, i think where possible a lane closure sign should be lit up…to give protection to the recovery guys, as ROB said, there have been some near misses, and a few fatalities, this system is used all the time on the continent.

Good idea in principle but how many of these clowns would take any notice, many of them don’t even understand what half the signs mean.

You seem to have mistaken me for someone who cares.

If that is true then you are just like the majority of road users these days.

Me to since some daft bugger tried going for the gap, it was another chuffin truck as well.

I also give a couple of flicks of the hazard lights if I feel other road users need switching on to a potential hazard, debris, broken down vehicle etc. No one takes any notice just makes me feel special.

Sometimes it’s next to impossible to get as far across as I’d like during the day, and of course to endless stream of nose to tails cars close ranks if they even think you want to be out (funny how they suddenly discover their accelerator pedals then), but I’ll say as a person who once did recovery it is very much appreciated when we do move across.

I remember it well it was a quiet Saturday I think I’d moved over as I could see a broken down truck on the h/s and lo and behind some kind of sporty Ford Focus came hurtling through on my left and I think he was racing the chap who hurtled past on my right.

Yep, ill always move over. Even if its only to straddle lanes 1 and 2.
Manys a time ive done it and then got closer and saw the nugget standing between the vehicle and the live motorway.
Like you though im also surprised at the number of drivers who just crack on full pelt in lane 1 and thunder past.

Yep always move over if safe to do so.

Its the law over here on the prairies…hazard lights on /on the hardshoulder /breakdown truck /tire truck move over and slow down to 60kph and if on a two way road and something is coming the other way you stop then pull over when clear (no slowing down and squeezing past).cops sometimes have a camera set up in car on hardshoulder to see who moves over …Not right I know sneaky b****. kin BIG fines & demerits .

I always moved over and still do in my car. For caravans too.

No you’re just proving the superiority in driving standards of regular night trunkers v day drivers doing a night shift. :smiling_imp:

When you have some people actually changing tyres in the carriageway theres not much choice, seems a Spanish way of thinking, never mind the danger everyone will just go around me… :grimacing:
