Hi guys haven’t posted in a while but interested in finding out if anyone knows, after being with my place driving a 16tonner for about 6 months (and loving it as firm I work for are 100% quality) my boss came to me this morning and asked if I’d like to take a different run as the guy doing it is due to leave end of this month. It’s driving a 26ton 64 plate CF for 3 weeks and then I’ll be getting a 66 plate 26 ton volvo fe ishift. It’s also more money each week as its an ADR run which brings me on to my actual question… my boss has told me he will be putting me through my ADR next week 10,11 & 12 October which is great (I think?) but what can I expect? What’s training like and examinations? I’ve never been great with them! Lol and will I have a licence card or certificate or something to show I hold said qualification?? Many thanks
Firstly, sounds like a good progression with an employer that you’re happy with. And that must be mutual. The ADR is classroom based followed by multiple choice exams. It’s not rocket science but you need to work hard at absorbing the information delivered during the training sessions.
On successful completion, you’ll be issued with a card which is valid 5 years and you must carry when on ADR work.
You may get some cpc hours as well as a bonus.
Diesel Dave is the ADR expert on the forum so anything more complicated, try him.

Hi Ryan,
Dave’s tips for a successful ADR course…
Turn up on time.
The instructor must give you some form of a handout or course textbook, but take a notebook and pen with you.
Find out what arrangements there are for meals and breaks, then customise it to your liking.
Don’t be tempted to do anything with your mobile phone during lessons, cos you can’t do two things at once.
Listen carefully to the instructor and make notes.
Don’t be afraid to ask a question (on topic) if you think you haven’t ‘got it.’
Take no notice of the big mouthed know-it-all wise-■■■ that you’ll find in most ADR classes, cos they’re usually dead wrong!
I never use the word “simple” to describe the exams, because they are designed to test that you were listening, so I’ll describe them as “straightforward,” provided that you take part in the lessons.
The exams are all multiple-choice as mentioned by Peter above.
The questions look a bit like millionaire on TV, that is… a shortish question, followed by four shortish choices called A, B, C or D, so you’ll do NO writing for the exams, because the correct answer to each question WILL be already written right in front of you.!!
All you do to indicate your answer is to put an “X” in the right box on the answer sheet.
If you get really stuck during your course, please post it up here and I’ll do my best to explain it for you once I get back from where I’m teaching next week.
Thanks for all the helpful and informative replies guys! Yes they are very good and I am very happy with them. Don’t think I’ve ever had a boss that’s so good and don’t see myself leaving anytime soon! Day 1 of ADR down and there is a lot of information to take in a lot we should already know really but a lot of new stuff as well. It wasn’t as mind numbing and as boring as I imagined it would be and wasn’t as bad being back in a class room either. Looking forward to the rest of the course and hopefully having my ADR at the end of it. Many thanks once again guys
Just an update that’s it. ADR course all done and exams finished now just a long wait to find out the results (was warned it would be around 28days?!) I feel I done well just the last exam I’m a little unsure of how well I done. Hope I get the right result! Anyway it really wasn’t as bad as I had expected and the exams weren’t as bad as I had imagined they would be. Thanks for all the help and advice guys!

I finished my course on 16th September and my card finally arrived today (12th October). So yes, it takes around 4 weeks to arrive.
If yo need your card quickly go to a trainer that does online exams. Finished my last exam at 12.30 on Friday 26th August. Card was in my hand when I went back to work Tuesday 30th. That includes a bank holiday Monday but as it came from Scotland that didn’t matter although still impressive to get from Scotland to Somerset over a weekend.
