i was taught NOBS , check both mirrors till it is clear to pull away, then signal, Near side, Offside ( mirror check ), Blind Spot then release handbrake & pull away>

Mirrors, signal, blind spot and then ensure you are looking in the direction of travel before you release the handbrake!

A fairly common mistake that I see is the handbrake being released while the candidate is still checking their blindspot (i.e. looking backwards over their shoulder!) when in actual fact, someone could’ve stepped in front of the vehicle since you last looked in the forward direction - it only takes a second!

The way I get my trainees to remember the moving off procedure is to check left mirror (checking for pedestrians/cyclists etc)
then working across the vehicle select gear and get onto right mirror to look for a gap.
When the gap appears and you are ready to move signal and check blind spot together (this movement is sort of natural right body twist with the left hand and shoulder working together to click the signal and turn the head to look behind)
Then as you reach for the handbrake turning back to your seat - re-check the left mirror - again a natural movement to the left.
As you drop the handbrake off - a forward movement - look ahead to wear you are going.
Sounds complicated on paper but easy to do and to remember.
So to re-cap:-
Left mirror - select gear
Right mirror wait for the gap
Signal with blind spot
Left mirror then go. (handbrake off looking ahead)
That way you have covered all the possible danger points and double checked that all is safe all the way around the vehicle.
