Motorway Services

Been a day man for the last 18 months. Anyway excrement hit the whirly thing on Thursday and I couldn’t get back. They told me to get a room. So I stopped at Hartshead Moor services. £43 for the room and it included truck parking. I didn’t think that was bad personally.

sounds ok, but did you get your n/o monry as well as the room? …

I’m salaried and they treat me well. All food and expenses were covered including a couple of beers.

■■■■ right, when i started driving after our lot put me through test I was sent away a lot in a day cab, if I wasn’t getting night out money for staying away (albeit in a Travelodge etc) I wouldn’t have done it.

Sounds like you’ve got a top firm there mate, that equates to 63 to 68 quid a night out.
If n/o money had increased with inflation that is what we would all be on, I was on a tenner when we were on 100 quid a week, so roughly about 10% to your wage.

Out of interest, do you ever cab it…or are you one of the ‘‘kipping in a tin box’’ crew.

I’ve kipped across seats for firms in the past. I’ve tramped. This firm are a rarity. We have a twelve week season where I pretty much max out ( only Mon to Friday though) I am doing all the planning and transport jobs. Then at the end of the season I’m about two days week. All on a decent yearly salary. So I can choose to work agency or just enjoy my time. Worked extra hard last week. ( Best week they had ever had) gave me £100 as a thank you. Ironically it’s only on a 7.5t and I don’t care what I drive as long as the monies there.

He has the long game in mind. He knows I could go at end of season and find some other job and he has to look again next season. Others could do with looking that way. It is their own product which helps rather than a haulage firm racing to go bust on stupid rates.

yeah, it’s a small family firm and tm is a director too but has worked his way up so been there done it (still not unusual to find him doing an mot wash under the thing getting covered!) so doesn’t expect anything of us he wouldn’t do himself. Yeah, cab all the way now mate, doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

When I do jobs in our 7.5T (Day cab) and stay in a hotel I don’t get night out money but I do have a company credit card all year for evening meals and then the next days breakfast/lunch etc so I don’t feel hard done by.

You sure your inflation thingy is right? You sure you’re on £630 a day and still whinging about no money?

Can’t see where I was ‘whinging’ tbh, …but hey ho.
I meant when I was on a 100 a week the nights out were a tenner, so the n/o equated to 10% of your weeks wage.
Most are on around 600 a week these days so the nights out would (or arguably should) be around 60 quid or thereabouts working on the same ratio.

Night out money should be raised in my opinion.
I’ve been doing nights out for 4 years now with 2 different company’s.
When I started them.i was on £25 a night and 4 years later will on 25 a night.
Yes had a small pay rise but so did all the day men as well.
And 25 doesn’t go far especially of you have to night out down south
