Motorway Screens

£22k a peice, I can get wooden ones from the garden centre for a tenner a panel…

bluenose:
And the sick bar stewards who take pictures/film accidents.

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20851775

it wont work

Good idea and will probably work well but why the hell did then spend 22k a set they dont look that far off normal welding screens that cost about £20 each

Bet they will be a right mare to put up if it’s a windy day!

Of course you could, but when spending the publics money the key is to spend lots.

Dont know where you lot where at maths lessons but its no 22k a set, its £766 a set

£766 x 3000 fences = 2.3million

Possibly but

BBC site:
The total cost of the purchase was £2.3m, with each set costing £22,000.

I belive the price quoted is for a set of multiple screens and probabaly a trailer and some other bits and peices for them, 3000 is the total number of individual screens not sets

And christ looking at the picture again it looks like normall site fencing and blocks with some green fabric zip tied on, really want to know who pocketed the 2.3 million

Where do you get £766 from?

Read the article again without your foot in your mouth.

“Each set has 30 screens which are loaded onto purpose-built trailers and can screen up to 75m if used end-to-end. The individual screens are approximately 2.1m by 2m high.”

Now, if you remember your junior skool maths . . . They’ve bought 105 screens for £2.3m with each set costing £22 000. Each set has 30 screens.

EACH 2.1m x 2m PANEL COSTS THE TAXPAYER £ . . . . ?

£733 what do I win?

Total cost 2.3 million divided by 3000 screens purchased = £766 each?

They’ve been desperate for such a screen system for more than 10yrs that I know of. The problem has been put to several universities, transport research institutes & companies with relative experience in the field.

Finally, they’ve awarded the contract. The plain brown envelopes stuffed full of £cash have whizzed over the apathetic taxpayers heads & straight into the pockets of . . . . .

set like that has been sat in cheivley yard for two years now , nice new ifor williams trailer the whole lot

These were introduced a couple of years ago but because they were an addition to the contracts set up with Amey, Carillion, Connect+ etc, they were deemed too expensive to deploy. They have been mothballed and it seems HATO will deliver them to scene, at no extra cost. I have been on two incidents where these screens were used and the effect on the opposite c/way was nearly immediately noticeable. Congestion disappeared within minutes. The other use is that these screens can shield a scene and let Police Collision Investigation continue whilst one lane is running past with the scene screened off. At the moment, that would mean the c/way being kept closed until investigation is finished. They seem expensive, but Government don’t buy cheaply ( they buy cheap stuff and pay far too much mostly :imp: ) and if it means getting lanes opened sooner, the cost to UK PLC will soon be recovered.

I’ll volunteer to cart them about in our patch, but you buggers can put them up & down!

Simple idea, great idea and bound to cause little congestion :stuck_out_tongue:

Are the screens numbered? that should create some interest for a spotters club.

They could advertise credit loans, no win solicitors and funeral care care plans on one side and insrance companies on the other.

How long will they last on Shap Fell on a rum night?

Like your style Wheel Nut lol…

I reckon they should advertise ■■■■■■ web sites tho, that would make certain people did not hang around for a gawp

They were around a few years ago, i trialled one of the first ever uses of one!!!

No its not perfect, but its better than no attempt to solve the problem is it not??
When i used them it made an immediate improvement to the opposite carriageway, trucks can still see over, cars cannot, who causes the congestion by rubbernecking??

I cant see the HATO’s deploying them though. Too many health and safety issues there, the MAC’s dont have any staff to deploy them, or vehicles to tow them. A lot of HATO vehicles have no towing electrics fitted, just a tow hook to drag damaged vehicles off the road althoughj i am sure this will be addressed with new cars.

In my opinion they will be an asset, time will prove me right hopefully but as one of the few who has used them i see them as a benefit to roadusers.

M.

All the younger HATOs have completed training and passed the relevant test to have towing categories added to their licences. This is purely so trailers can be towed, in my opinion. Clearing wrecks to the hard shoulder has always been called ’ carriageway clearance’ so never classed as towing. Boss of HA has already stated the screens will be based at outstations, so put two and two together. Fitting electrics to tow bars is easy as I understand the Discoverys have the wiring in place so it just needs a plug fitted. I also believe HATOs will deploy because within a few years Incident Support Units will be a thing of the past.
