That’s why information is the way to solve the problem. Maybe some sort of printed leaflet in a variety of languages to be given to drivers as they enter the country, I don’t know. That would at least make it clear that you DON’T have to pay to take up to two hours’ break in an MSA. I really do think that is 99% of the problem, especially given the differences in the value of £20 in “real” terms as detailed by Drew above. Drivers’ myths are responsible for so many problems of this kind, and the only way to fight them is to correct them.
As an aside, I’ve always found the best way to deal with sexism is to ignore it.
At last a voice of reason- a great idea - these could be passed to each driver upon entry into UK Port or even exiting EU Port.

If you are going to use the quote feature on internet forums could you possibly take a little time to learn not to tick the disable BBCode option in your posts. It’s the BBCode which makes the quote feature work see. If you could see your way to doing that it would make for less work having to edit every single one of your posts to make them more readable. Thank you.

…We all need to get together collectively and get it sorted.
What is it Marina that “we” are going to “collectively” do, to sort out this “eastern european” motorway parking and laptop watching whilst driving, problem?
Traffic was quite busy as well. Did a U-Turn on a main road. Even though - well I’m not sure if I’m correct - it’s no illegal, it’s a bit inconvenient and quite dangerous with busy traffic.

I aint gonna lighten any mood. The other week, I was driving down a hill and a truck from Turkey did a U-Turn:

We all need to lobby the government to provide more MSA’s/rest areas/secure parking - at a reasonable cost - which would then free up the hard shoulder for the use it is intended - emergencies only.
Shock horror! Well I must put myself in the stocks with those Eastern European drivers and those who run bent
This is my crime for which I will confess…
I done a U-turn at this junction at 08:30 last week, (6x2 pulling 45 foot triaxle trailer) and about 25 times before that. It has inconvenienced many but it makes my job a lot easier…

Typical woman… doesn’t listen. Needs a big strong man to come along to fix what she doesn’t know…

Wow… bet no one ever thought of doing that… Good job you are here Marina. We are all saved!
interesting how when i brought up the subject of parking problems a few weeks ago i didnt suffer any digs about it. women are in the haulage industry including a couple of staff on this very site. so what? there is old fashioned but this is taking the ■■■■
there is a lack of secure parking and its the drivers who are at the sharp end of the consequences. thats US! does it really matter who brings the subject up?

Hiya - hope you had a good day keeping the wheels of industry moving. As you can see I am treating the imature comments with the contempt they deserve - tried to keep it to the subject in discussion, but most seem intent on personal attack - can’t be bothered to respond anymore. You have a good evening, speak soon

I had a day off work today, and decided to spend it with my husband, who is an owner operator. I was absolutely horrified to see many Eastern European truck drivers using the hard shoulder as a rest area. Where are VOSA or the police■■? Or is it still that there are different laws for UK hauliers to that of our Eastern European drivers??
The standard of driving demonstrated today by these ‘so called’ professional drivers, beggars belief. I can totally understand after just one day of travelling on our UK roads how angry you British ‘PROFESSIONAL’ drivers must feel. It is about time our Government, Police and VOSA looked at the professional conduct of our own hauliers, and realised it is way above anything that the Eastern Europeans can offer. Just another one to add to my rant for the day - a driver from Czech Republic overtook us on the M25 and he was enjoying himself watching a film on his laptop…says it all doesn’t it.
Marina
Where is the issue of lack of MSA/Secure parking highlighted in the original post of this topic?
To me it looks like some hysteric rant about Eastern European drivers being all bad and the good old British Truckers being the best in the world… How angry us British Professional Drivers must feel
…by someone who knows nothing about life on the road.
male or female, i dont like arse kissers so pack it in
there does seem to be the occasional evidence of cliche in this industry. if you arent male with 40 years experience on the road, you are not worthy. my response sounds remarkably like a certain bathgate based hauliers name, for those who dont know its Pollocks. we are all facing the same problems and we are all on the same side. petty squabbling isnt helping anyone and to be blunt, its quite embarrassing to watch. we are all frustrated with the industry but taking it out on each other is not going to do any good
Breaker One Nine - I will, just for you, reiterate my comments - of the 30 or so trucks parked on the hard shoulder - all were of EE origin - ‘FACT’. It is ‘ILLEGAL’ to park on the hard shoulder unless in an emergency ‘FACT’
In response to your comment that ‘I know nothing of life on the road’ - I have been married to an International LGV driver for many years, and as you already know run our own company. I do not profess to knowing everything in life, unlike you seem to…
Thank you for reiterating your points… much appreciated. I was previously in ownership of that knowledge but thank you.
So your original post was not about the driving standards of Eastern European drivers who beggared your belief but was about them parking on the hard shoulder, which horrified you?
Okay… Well you be horrified, The Eastern European drivers will still park on the hard shoulder, the Police will deal with them and everyone goes home happy…
On a serious note -I am so pasionate about this issue - because my husband had the need for the emergency services in Belgium - fortunately they were able to get to him, and thus save his life. Had this been last Friday, well who knows - he probably wouldn’t have been here to tell the tale.
And yes I am renound for being feisty - my old boss said ‘Marina - you are a woman with balls’ - I don’t look like a fella though, honestly…
